7 Movies To Watch During Winter
I love watching movies, especially cozy or engaging ones to watch as I spend a lot of time indoors during the Winter months. I’ve seen so many over the years, but here are some picks of movies that I’ve enjoyed and recommend for anyone looking to add films to their seasonal watchlist.
Ice Castles
Alexis Winston (Lynn-Holly Johnson) is a young girl who dreams of becoming a champion figure skater. One night, while practicing, Alexis suffers a terrible accident that takes her sight and threatens to destroy her dreams. In the midst of feeling sorry for herself she falls in love with a handsome young man named Nick (Robbie Benson) who (with help from her family) helps her to realize that she can still fulfill her dreams.
I love to watch anything ice skating related as it’s my favorite Winter sport. I really enjoyed Ice Castles. It was a heartwarming story about a small town girl who has big dreams of being an Olympic skater. It’s also about overcoming life’s obstacles. The skating sequences in this film were so beautifully executed on film and the OST was great.
The Revenant
The Revenant is a film based on the experiences of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass in 1823. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Glass who sustains injuries from a brutal bear attack. When his hunting team leaves him for dead, Glass must utilize his survival skills to find a way back home to his beloved family.
I love historically based stories so I was really excited to see this film. Though it was a 2 hour film, there was never a dull moment. The story is lengthy, but fast paced and there is always some action to keep viewers attention. I loved the cinematography and how the entire film was shot in natural lighting. If you’re going to see any award nominated film add this to your list.
Eddie The Eagle
Cut from the Olympic ski team, British athlete Michael “Eddie” Edwards travels to Germany to test his skills at ski jumping. Fate leads him to Bronson Peary, a former ski jumper who now works as a snowplow driver. Impressed by Edwards’ spirit and determination, Peary agrees to train the young underdog. Despite an entire nation counting him out, Eddie’s never-say-die attitude takes him all the way to a historic and improbable showing at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.
This was such an uplifting and inspiring film! Egerton and Jackman do a fantastic job of portraying these legendary sport figures and I loved their on-screen chemistry as coach and trainee. It’s a very moving film and I love the message of “never giving up” it sends to the audience!
Ice Road
After a remote diamond mine collapses in the far northern regions of Canada, an ice driver leads an implausible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the lives of trapped miners despite thawing waters and a threat they never see coming.
It’s fast-paced, with high suspense, and many thriller factors. I used to watch shows about Ice Road Truckers occasionally so it was really interesting to see a film about it. This movie had me on the edge of my seat with all of its twists and turns. There were a few plot twists I did not see coming which added to the suspense factors. I think if you’re looking for a film with high adrenaline, this may be a good watch for you.
Cool Runnings
Four Jamaican bobsleighers dream of competing in the Winter Olympics, despite never having seen snow. With the help of a disgraced former champion desperate to redeem himself, the Jamaicans set out to become worthy of Olympic selection, and go all out for glory.
This was and is still one of my favorite Disney live-action movies to watch! It’s part biopic, part comedy film as we watch the team learn the sport of Bobsledding and experience a snowy Winter for the first time. I feel like this film is so memorable to me and many others is because it showcases the team’s determination to compete in a sport completely foreign to them and how they overcome many obstacles. It’s inspiring, funny, and overall a feel-good film!
Society of The Snow
The flight of a rugby team crashes on a glacier in the Andes. The few passengers who survive the crash find themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments to survive.
The cinematography of this film was so breathtaking and the story was incredibly heartbreaking and tragic. This story is told with authenticity and a very keen Director’s eye which you can tell by the attention to the smallest details. It was an intense movie and at times very hard to watch. The film immersive the viewer into the events of this real-life disaster. The film gives a message of hope at times when we are facing terrible challenges ahead of us.
The Thing
In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot and the camp doctor lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.
I went into this film blind and not knowing much about it, but I’m glad I did so. It only enhanced my viewing experience and made it that much more suspenseful. Though the film is full of jump scares and some terrific special effects the true horror aspects are the quieter moments of the film. The characters become paranoid as the creature can take human form leading to great suspicion in the camp (which also seeps into the audience too). This movie had me on the edge of my seat!
