Favorite Summer Films!
Since we’re still in the midst of Summer’s bright sunny days I thought to put together a compilation of some of my all-time favorite Summer themed films I’ve watched over the years. This list a mixture of childhood favorites, action blockbusters, and memorable stories to make you laugh. Hope you enjoy!
The Sandlot
Synopsis: In the summer of 1962, a new kid in town is taken under the wing of a young baseball prodigy and his rowdy team, resulting in many adventures.
What a classic! One look at this film and it can make anybody reminisce about the dog days of summer as child. Usually I don’t enjoy sports movies, but this movie is mainly character driven even though its focused on baseball. The characters bond together over the sport and their friendship. Plus the crazy antics that occur are sure to make you laugh.
Blue Crush
Synopsis: the story of three friends who have one passion: living the ultimate dream of surfing on Hawaii’s famed North Shore.
This movie technically takes place in Hawaii, so I’m not sure if it qualifies as a summer movie but it gives me all of the summer feels. Every time I watch this movie it make me want to learn how to surf and lounge around the beach. It’s not only a movie about the bonds of friendship, but it also focuses on surfing as a sport.
Lilo & Stitch
Synopsis: A Hawaiian girl adopts an unusual pet who is actually a notorious extra-terrestrial fugitive.
If you ask me anytime, I’ll tell you that my number one favorite non-Princess Disney film is Lilo & Stitch. It’s got a Sci-Fi feel as Stitch is an alien that comes from the galaxy beyond, but it’s equally a laugh out loud comedy. The soundtrack is a combination of upbeat Hawaiian music and rockin’ Elvis tracks. What is most heartwarming is the touching scenes between Lilo and her older sister Nani, as they only have each other to rely on.
RV
Synopsis: Bob Munro and his dysfunctional family rent an RV for a road trip to the Colorado Rockies, where they ultimately have to contend with a bizarre community of campers.
One of my favorite comedy films with Robin Williams (who I dearly miss) is RV. It’s the complete essence of a summer family road trip. The more people the family meet over the course of the trip makes their adventure even crazier. Some points of this trip had me in tears of laughter. Even though the trip is full of ups and downs (which I’ve experienced myself with family road trips) they still bond together.
We’re The Millers
Synopsis: This movie follows a small-time pot dealer who convinces his neighbors to create a fake family, in order to smuggle in drugs from Mexico onto US soil.
This movie is not necessarily a “summer” film, but I do think it qualifies as a great summer comedy. It’s a got a mixture of some of favorite actors and actresses that I enjoy. It’s a bit on the raunchy side (not really a family film), but I thought the plot was entertaining and the audience will enjoy seeing these completely different people come together for a common goal.
Independence Day
Synopsis: The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy Earth. Fighting superior technology, mankind’s best weapon is the will to survive.
Another one of my childhood favorites! Independence Day was a huge summer blockbuster when it was released in the 90s. Will Smith was basically at the top (was featured in a ton of movies at that time) and it’s got Jeff Goldblum too. It’s got a lot of fantastic action scenes that will entertain you and it’s got some great moments of comic relief too. One of the best “alien” movies in my opinion.
Roman Holiday
Synopsis: A bored and sheltered princess escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman in Rome.
Roman Holiday is my number one favorite Audrey Hepburn movie. For most people it’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but I fell in love with this film the first time I watched it. The movie really sparks the travel bug within you as the cinematography shows the most gorgeous places throughout the city of Rome. Plus it’s a fun love story, so if you enjoy classic Hollywood romance films I recommend this movie.

I’ve only seen one of these! Independence Day.
It’s one of my top favorite Will Smith movies. 🙂
Independence Day! One of Will Smith’s best in my opinion.
Same! It’s probably my favorite action film with Will.
I really enjoyed watching “Stranger Things” last summer. It reminded me of adventure stories I loved as a kid, like The Goonies. A lot of the movies I think of as summer movies actually weren’t, but they feel like it in my mind, because I used to rewatch them endlessly on hot summer days when it was too beastly to move (and it didn’t occur to me how much hotter the TV was making the house by watching endlessly :P).
Stranger Things is a good pick! And it does make a good adventure story for summertime watching. I love The Goonies! I never get tired of watching it.
