My Favorite Things 2017: Music
Next in my 2017 wrap-up segments I’ll be talking about my favorite albums and EPs and new favorite artists from the past year. Narrowing down music into compilation posts is always a daunting task for me since I listen to a wide variety of music on a daily basis. I saw some favorites comeback strong with fantastic new music and new artists that outshone the old.
Here’s a list of some of my 2017 favorites in music (albums only, because listing this by songs would be way too long of a post). Enjoy!
So Good by Zara Larsson
Zara Larsson put together an impressive debut album for her first international album. It got a great mixture of house, pop, and R&B tracks that are solid. I think for the most part her vocals are pretty solid on this album and I like the versatility of the songs featured.
Favorite Tracks: So Good, Sundown, Ain’t My Fault
Sunrise by DAY6
I got to see DAY6 live this past fall. They were the first k-pop concert I’ve ever attended and they left a great impression on me. I’ll admit I was unfamiliar with their music until the concert. I love how each member’s voice has a unique sound and together as a band they really stand out. Plus their songwriting skills are so good!
Favorite tracks: You Were Beautiful, I Smile, I Wait, Dance Dance
El Dorado by Shakira
Shakira is my girl! This is not my favorite of her Spanish-language albums, but it still left an impression on me. It’s got some spicy dance tracks, beautiful ballads, and lots of collaborations too! I think the collab songs where what stood out most to me. And as always Shakira’s rich vibrato shines throughout the album.
Favorite Tracks: La Bicicleta, Amarillo, Deja Vu
Eclipse by EXID
This is the first EP promoted by EXID as a 4-member group, since lead vocalist Solji was recovering from medical issues. Despite the lead vocalist not being able to participate in album this was such a solid EP. It’s got a fusion off Pop, R&B, and Dance tracks. Plus I love when Hani and LE get solo tracks.
Favorite Tracks: Night Rather Than Day, Boy
Future Friends by Superfruit
I am so proud of Scott and Mitch! This album was amazing! When they talked about doing a Superfruit album I was excited to see what kind of album they would create and it didn’t disappoint. This album captures their creativity and their own sound. I loved how they released multiple MVs for this album too! I hope they will make another Superfruit album in the future.
Favorite Tracks: Imaginary Parties, Hurry Up, Fantasy, Worth It (Perfect)
Rookie by Red Velvet
Red Velvet has climbed into my top 10 K-pop girl groups. They’ve got a solid set of vocals, can harmonize as a whole, and each of their voices are great! To be honest, I actually hated the song Rookie, it was repetitive and didn’t really stand out, but after several listens I learned to love it. While this EP has a lot of their cutesy music, it also showcases their “velvet” (mature) side.
Favorite Tracks: Rookie, Happily Ever After, Little Little
Vol. IV – Classics by Pentatonix
You can’t go wrong with a PTX album! Though they’ve done multiple cover albums before, this one is a bit special because of the classic songs featured on her. Hearing their special arrangements of my favorites such as Take On Me sounds so cool! While paying homage to the original sound they also made it with that special PTX twist.
Favorite Tracks: Over The Rainbow, Take on Me, Bohemian Rhapsody
