My Favorite Things: May

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Good Sam

Synopsis: A reporter finds love as she searches for a mysterious person who’s leaving cash on people’s doorsteps in New York City.

I was searching for a feel-good movie in the midst of all these difficult times and found Good Sam. It’s a movie about hope, good Samaritans, and believing in the unseen. The character is such a skeptic about most things in life and I enjoyed watching her journey of opening heart and mind to new possibilities. It was a bit predictable at some points, but I still feel that it’s a solid feel-good movie.

Song of The Sea

Synopsis: An Irish youth discovers that his mute sister is a selkie who must find her voice and free supernatural creatures from the spell of a Celtic goddess.

The story for this animated gem is so beautiful and I was blown away by the artwork. The vivid colors and animation style really captured the essence of this film. I am drawn to stories featuring folklore, so I enjoyed how this one explores selkies through the lens of young children. I can’t believe I didn’t watch this movie when it was first released! I highly recommend it.

TV

Nadiya’s Time to Eat

Synopsis: Nadiya Hussain shares a mouth-watering selection of stress-free recipes designed to help people save time and calm hectic lives.

I’m not the best cook, but I love cooking shows! I love this show and all of it’s delicious recipes. Forewarning, do not watch this show when you are hungry! I like the variety of recipes showcased and that they seem easy to make. Nadiya’s recipes are more focused on spending less time and the kitchen and that’s what makes her recipes so appealing to me. I can’t wait to try making on of her creations.

Carole & Tuesday

Synopsis: It has been 50 years since mankind began its migration to the terraformed Mars, where they live by in the comforts of advancement in AI. Carole lives in the metropolis of Alaba City, working part-time by day and playing keyboard by night. Tuesday has run away from her home in Hershell City to escape the grip of her wealthy family, and instead hopes to pursue music with her acoustic guitar.

After a fateful encounter, the two decide to perform music together. Up against the AI singers that dominate the music world, the two of them believe that together they can convey their feelings through their songs. Will hard work and luck be enough for the duo to create the biggest miracle that Mars has ever seen?

I have had this anime on my to-watch list since I heard it was released. I was particularly excited because one of the main characters of the series is Black. I’m still working my way through the series, but I love how light-hearted and motivational it can be at times. Carole and Tuesday face a lot of hardships during entering the music world. They face a lot of obstacles, but have a positive attitude. Plus the music is so good! I was surprised to hear that the OST is in English since most anime soundtracks have Japanese songs. I also like the variety of music showcased.

Married at First Sight

Synopsis: The cart comes way before the horse in the reality series “Married at First Sight.” Based on a hit Danish format, “Married…” features people who agree to participate in an extreme experiment: Each covenants legal marriage with a complete stranger. Specialists — including a spiritualist, a relationship coach and a sociologist — use scientific matchmaking methods to determine each couple, who will not have met or had contact with each other until the wedding day. The series then documents the relationships, including honeymoons and other relatable events of married life. After several weeks, each couple must decide whether to remain together or go their individual ways.

I’m a sucker for reality TV shows, so when I saw a new season of of Married at First Sight on Netflix I watched it in one week, lol. I’m finding I really enjoy shows with social experiments so I’ve been watching this show for years. It’s always interesting to see what kinds of people get matched up as couples. Some of the outcomes of the relationships always surprise me.

I Don’t Understand What My Husband is Saying

Synopsis: Though they couldn’t be any more different, love has managed to blossom between Hajime Tsunashi, a hardcore otaku who shuts himself in at home while making a living off his blog, and his wife Kaoru—a hard-working office lady who, in contrast, is fairly ordinary, albeit somewhat of a crazy drunk. As this unlikely couple discovers, love is much more than just a first kiss or a wedding; the years that come afterward in the journey of marriage brings with it many joys as well as challenges.

This is a very and funny anime about a married couple that are very polar opposites. Even though they are so different from each other they still make a goood couple. It chaotic and outrageous sometimes because the character get into crazy antics, but that’s what makes this show so fun to watch. It’s easily bingeable because each episode is 3 minutes long and each season (there are two total) has about 10 episodes.

Music

Unbreakable by Lauren Dyson (Carole & Tuesday OSt)

This song is sung by one of characters (Crystal) in Carole & Tuesday who is an R&B singer. She is dubbed by fans of the show a “Space Beyonce”. This is one of my favorite songs off of the OST so far.

Stay Tonight by Chung Ha

This track is definitely perfect for strutting your stuff on the runway. It immediately made me think of Vogue. The choreography and the visuals for this song are so good!

  1. Ooh, I’d forgotten about Song of the Sea, so thanks for the reminder! I’ve added it to my list — maybe it can be my viewing for this evening!

I can barely remember the month of May and what I did and read in it. Are we 100% that May actually occurred at all? If it did occur, I believe that I read Martha Wells’s new Murderbot novel (superb) and NK Jemisin’s latest fantasy (also superb) during it, and those were probably my reading highlights.
