Today’s Topic: My Bad Reading Habits Book Tag
Found At: ReaderVoracious
Judging a Book By Its Cover
I know I’m not the only person guilty of this. I do have a habit of picking up a book by its cover. I’ll still read the description, but I do own some books in my collection that are complete cover buys. I won’t lie that a pretty cover gets me to pick up a book. Sometimes that has come back to bite me because I completely dislike the book or it didn’t turn out to be the book I thought it would.
Not Finishing a Book Series
This happens to me quite a bit. Mostly with novels or even manga series I started many years ago. I start a series and I never finish the books. Sometimes it’s because I lost interest in the series because I don’t read those types of books anymore or I just forgot about them. I would like to sit down one day and make a list of some series I would like to finish reading. For some of my favorites series, I didn’t finish reading the book because I didn’t want the story to end.
Forgetting to Use/Losing My Bookmarks
I have a ton of bookmarks and I’m always forgetting to use them or end up losing them in the house. Whenever I need a bookmark I can never seem to find one. Does anyone else have this issue?
Buying a New Book, Instead of Reading What’s Already on My TBR
Enough said. Everytime I walk into a bookstore and even when I’m browsing through ebooks on my Kindle it never fails that I see a new book and buy it. Granted this doesn’t happen everytime I go window shopping but it’s enough that I said I would go on book buying bans. Although I find a complete ban doesn’t really work for me too well so maybe I should setting a limit of books to buy or a budget. My library is overflowing with books and I need to read what I have.
Ignoring My TBR Completely
I think this mainly happens due to me being such a mood reader. I have a very hard time sticking to TBR lists or a TBR pile. I started out strong in 2021 with having a set TBR, but it fell through by the middle of the year. It mainly became a list of books I needed to review for the blog because they were ARCs/review copies and then I just read whichever book caught my eye on my bookshelves.
Forgetting to Write Notes for a Book Review
This doesn’t happen with books I need to review that are copies sent to me by publishers or ARCs, but rather books from my own collection. I say that I’ll jot down notes, it never happens, and then it makes it harder to write the review. I have trouble especially writing review notes for an audiobook and haven’t figured out a good way to notate things that stick out to me while I listen to them.

I laughed when I read some your point I can so relate. Great tag!
Thanks! 🙂
YAS, I used to leave book series unfinished so often because not only was I reluctant to officially “finish” but I was concerned that it wouldn’t end the way I wanted it too and then I’d be stuck thinking about that.
If it helps, I use sticky notes or flags while I’m reading, so that I can mark the passage without actually slowing down to take a real note. Then, flipping through after the fact, I can also reconsider whether I really do want to make a note or whether that bit was less important having finished reading. *shrug* Procrastinating? Maybe… 😉
I need to just push myself to finish the series. Luckily, I found out that some of the series that I have left unfinished have spin-offs. So yay for more book universe content! I tried using sticky notes with books but it didn’t work that well for me with fun books. But I did note books like that when I read for class in college.
If we weren’t supposed to judge a book by its cover, they wouldn’t hire cover artists and designers *shrug*. I’m getting better at not losing book marks and taking notes for reviews. I have a book planner to jot things down in. My bad habit is forcing myself to finish books I don’t like (which puts me in a slump or otherwise saps my reading energy) and overcommitting with my reading plans.
I used to finish books I didn’t like, but now I have no problem DNFing a book at all. I think my only gripe with book covers is that when I look at the cover art it depicts a happy-go-lucky story, but the story ends up being really sad which I’m not prepared for at all (just for an example). I used to have a book review journal and I regularly jotted down notes in there and it helped me so much! I need to go back to that.
