I loved the overall setting in scenic Maui in The Unhoneymooners. The warm weather and sandy beaches made me want to go on a tropical vacation. Hawaii is a place is I’ve always wanted to go and I was glad to able to experience a bit oft it through reading this novel. This novel is humorous and fully of crazy antics that will keep readers entertained.

This manga series follows the story of Kahoko Hino who attends Seiso Academy is a prestigious high school that sorts students into two majors. Kahoko has a chance encounter with Lili, a small fairy searching for someone with the ability to see and gives her a magical violin and convinces her to participate in the school’s competition. It’s a great series if you like musical stories with a little bit of fantasy.

This novel also delves into generational trauma that has been passed down and how it’s also greatly had an impact on Luciana’s (main character) life. Learning about her family’s lost secrets not only helps her become more closer and understand her family, but also to be more confident about the woman she wants to be.

A Comb of Wishes is a contemporary fantasy tale that follows Kela, who is still grieving after her mother’s death. She’s been struggling to cope and as a result, has shut out everyone due to grief. One day while walking on the beach she discovers a magical comb that is owned by Ophidia who grants her a wish, but that wish will prove to have dangerous consequences.

The pages of The Only Black Girls in Town weave together a story of growing up, solving a decades old mystery, and changing friendships. This was an engaging middle grade novel from beginning to end. Readers get to watch Albert and Edie grow through great character development over the course of the novel and how they tackle relationship obstacles in their lives. They are fun characters to follow through the course of the story and the way their friendship blossoms over the course of the story is so heartwarming to see.

I love to read retellings so The Forbidden Wish was a great find on my own bookshelves. I felt that this retelling of Aladdin was enthralling and also felt fresh. Readers follow Aladdin as he discovers Zahra’s jinni lamp and goes on a journey of magic, romance, and adventure. Khoury has a way of mixing familiar elements of the story while adding many new and unique elements.

Going into the novel initially and reading its synopsis, I thought A Haunting in Hialeah Gardens would be a run-of-the-mill ghost/horror story, but in fact, the novel is much deeper than the haunting at the surface. At its core, this novel is a story about overcoming grief, trauma, and the past that can sometimes haunt us. As a whole this novel was very underwhelming and the pacing was so slow.

An amateur sleuth, an unsuspecting victim, a quirky supporting cast, and trail of clues are the main ingredients of a cozy mystery. Except for in the The Kamogawa Food Detectives the cozy mystery revolves around a mysterious restaurant, delicious recipes, and piecing together clues from the customers past. It has a cozy setting and overall light-hearted feel as each chapter delves into a special food item the Kamogawa’s are asked to replicate per their request.
