Indie Bookstores to Visit in Metro Detroit Pt.5

Hello everyone! I love visiting independent bookstores and shopping at local businesses regularly. Because it’s important to #shopsmall, here are some bookstores in the Metro Detroit area that you should visit when you’re here. Some of these shops have websites that you can shop at as well if you can’t shop in person! (Previous List Here)

Eras Bookstore

A brand new bookstore on this list is Eras Bookstore in Lake Orion, Michigan. This store opened in March 2024! Eras is a independent bookstore & café filled coffee, snacks, and curated selection of books. This story mainly focuses on new book releases and popular titles, but they also have a buy back program so you can also buy used books in their store. The store is small but spacious with a open floor layout that is cozy and tables near the coffee bar for reading or working. Plus they also sell some great bookish merch!

Inscribe Books

Inscribe Books located in Clarkston, MI independent bookstore owned and operated by two Clarkston residents who have shared a friendship and a love for reading for over two decades. Though small in space they still have a wide variety of books to shop from many different genres. One of the things that stood out to me is that this store hosts a multitude of book clubs From the Books and Brews Book Club to the The Elle Woods Book Club there is something for every reader.

Coreander’s Children’s Bookshoppe

Coreander’s Children’s Bookshoppe located in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan carries books for babies through young adults. They also have café called, Café Meem which serves coffee and snack, and the theater adjacent to the café hosts story time and author visits. I visited this bookstore for the first time on Independent Bookstore day and it is truly a magical experience. From the whimsical murals that line the wall to the bright book displays Coreander makes for a very immersive shop experience. Though aimed at children’s books it’s definitely a bookstore that makes any adult nostalgic for their childhood favorite reads.

Next Chapter Books

Next Chapter Books is a general-interest new and secondhand bookstore. Located on in the East English Village of Detroit the store offers a variety of books (including a nice local authors section) and a wide variety of programs from story times, author visits, and even some open mic nights. Growing up in Detroit I would have love to have a bookstore like this to go to especially since it was near my old neighborhood. I love seeing a literary space like this thrive and also offer a good selection of new titles as well as affordable used books.

Stay tuned for part six! What bookstores do you like to visit in your area?
