What is the highest-rated book that you gave a low rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on Average Ratings and find the highest-rated book you gave a low rating.)

The book is very slow-moving and sometimes I felt it drag at certain points of the story. The dialogue and narrative are a bit stagnant which was disappointing. Overall, I felt that this was more of a coming of age story than story with fantasy elements (per the book’s description).

Cobalt Chronicles is a story about of Esy who from a young age, faces the harsh realities of survival in the Congo while working in the Combat mines. This novel was so well written and and detailed heavily to immerse the reader into Esy’s story and her struggles. Though the novel was hard to read at many times hard to read, I appreciated this story greatly. Esy’s story is harrowing and heartbreaking but it also shows great adversity against the odds that she undergoes.

Sorry Austen fans. I know I give this book a lot of hate even though its classic literature, but I think one of the reasons I dislike the story so much was not so much as the plot line, but that the timeline and dialogue felt drawn out over way too many pages.

This dark fantasy tells the tale of kings and queens, otherworlds, and magic. It’s full of heavy suspense and the dark atmosphere really adds to some of the creepier elements of the story. The book was a bit hard to follow at times making it hard to understand what was going on, but I did appreciate all of the unique fantasy elements it had. I do enjoy fantasy novels, but I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. It was more of a matter of me and not the book itself.

Juniper Leaves follows the story of a young teenage black girl who embarks on a magical adventure.  Joyner does a great job of world building and creating a lush fantasy world full of strange creatures and beautiful landscapes. The detail made the reader feel as if they too were in the story. Canatis (the fantasy world) reminded of some of my favorite fantasy world such as Narnia!

 In this novel, the main character navigates the world between myth and chaos through a journey of self-discovery. I felt the novel was weird and underwhelming. The plot felt a bit all over the place for me.

Choose two books that have an average rating of 4/5 stars but you gave a lower rating.

I loved seeing Geffri (the main character) and her representation as a Black female baseball player. It was so rewarding to see in this novel. I thought the quick banter between the leads and supporting characters was entertaining. Seeing the special bond between her and her dad was very endearing. I did feel the pacing was a bit off and sometimes the story feel flat.

In this novel the main character, Bethany Lu Carlisle finds out her idol Keanu Reeves is getting married in 90 days, she feels adrift. So she comes up with a crazy plan to find him and stop from getting married. It was funny and the romance was nice too. I gave it 3-star rating though as I felt something was missing from the novel.

I’m kind of in the middle. I usually don’t follow the Goodreads ratings that closely.
