Indie Bookstores to Visit in Metro Detroit Pt.6

Hello everyone! I love visiting independent bookstores and shopping at local businesses regularly. Because it’s important to #shopsmall, here are some bookstores in the Metro Detroit area that you should visit when you’re here. Some of these shops have websites that you can shop at as well if you can’t shop in person! (Previous List Here)

Novel

Novel is a bookstore and sandwich shop located in Downtown Rochester. The shop is run by a husband-wife team (who I met when I visited), who brought together their two loves (food and books) to share with the community. Though small, this shop is cozy and is stocked with books (for kids and adults), bookish accessories, and stationery too! There is space to browse along with tables to enjoy food and catch up with friends. Their sandwiches and coffee were so delicious! I will have to try more of their menu when I return again.

Detroit Specials Used Books

Detroit Specials Used Books is a used bookstore near the New Center area of Detroit. They are also located near one of my favorite local comic shops, Vault of Midnight so you can travel to two bookstores at one time. The store donating a portion of sales to Detroit animal rescue organizations and also has two bookstore cats as well. They have a wide variety of books to shop from and like any used book store if you search around long enough you’ll find some books to take home with you!

Shaw’s Books

Located in Grosse Pointe Park, Shaw’s Books is a used-book shop with an extensive selection of rare books, especially sailing-related titles as well. The store was established in 1983 by Hank Zuchowski and annually participates in antiquarian book fairs throughout the United States. If you’re seeking a treasure hunt for used books or collectible books, this is a store you should visit. The store felt like a maze of wonders and I saw so many titles that piqued my interest and special editions of novels I wanted for my own collection.

Haru Cafe

Though not a bookstore entirely, I wanted to include Haru Cafe because it’s centered around manga! Haru Cafe is a cozy manga café where you can enjoy a wide selection of manga, delicious beverages, and a relaxing atmosphere. You can’t purchase these books, but if you’re looking for a leisurely afternoon activity of reading some manga while enjoying some treats you should stop by. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and they have a great selection of manga to read, good music to vibe to, and lots of cozy chairs too!

Stay tuned for part seven! What bookstores do you like to visit in your area?
