What I’m Listening To…90’s Anime Themes Vol. 2
Hello readers! I love listening to music of all genres on a daily basis. I can’t go a day without popping on some headphones and listening to some upbeat tunes while I dance around my room or relax from a long day by listening to calming songs. In my segment “What I’m Listening To” I share some of my favorite song picks with you in a mini-playlist consisting of five tracks.
I love 90’s anime music and art style so much. Even though I didn’t start watching anime until the mid 2000s, these songs/shows give me some nostalgia. I hope you enjoy these picks!
Catch You Catch Me by GUMI
This bubbly opening song matches the theme of Cardcaptor Sakura and it’s magical girl theme. It’s also so catchy to sing along with. It has such a happy, upbeat melody! This anime follows an elementary school student who discovers magical powers after accidentally freeing a set of magical cards into the world. It’s a classic shojo anime!
Tank! by The Seatbelts
Though I’ve never watched this anime (only clips of it), the soundtrack by Yoko Kanno is legendary. This anime is a space Western about the misadventures and tragedies of an easygoing bounty hunter and his partners. This theme song is jazzy with a Bossa Nova sound. It captures the listener’s attention from the very first notes and instantly has you jamming along to the various instruments in play.
We Are! by Hiroshi Kitadani
I don’t watch One Piece anymore, but grew up watching it on 4Kids in my childhood. The series follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as he explores the Grand Line in search of the mythical treasure known as the “One Piece” to become the next King of the Pirates. It holds a special place in my heart. I feel like We Are! captures the spirit of adventure and friendship that is presented throughout the series. It gets me excited every time I hear it and motivated to start my day!
Ultra Relax by by Tomoe Shinohara
Kodocha is not an anime I hear many people talk about, but it’s one of my favorites. The series is about seventh-grader Sana Kurata who must deal with being a famous child actress while also coping with her family and school. This second opening song for the series captures the many wacky antics that happen in the series as well as Sana’s playful nature. I always do the dance when I here the song.
Truth by Luca Yumi
Revolutionary Girl Utena follows Utena Tenjou, a teenaged girl who is drawn into a sword dueling tournament to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the “Rose Bride” who possesses the “power to revolutionize the world”. It’s a mid-tempo track that captures the theme of the show: struggles of adolescence and breaking free from societal expectations.
