Wonderful Writers: Alice Walker

Every week I spotlight and discuss one of my favorite authors, books by them, and talk about their writing styles and such. I hope you’ll enjoy. About: Alice Walker is an American author and activist. She is known for being an activist for human rights and was a part of the Civil Rights Movement in the South. Her novel, The Color Purple is a critically acclaimed novel on the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It became a bestseller and was adapted into a movie in 1985 as well as a Broadway musical in 2005. Walker has written several other novels, including The Temple of My Familiar and Possessing the Secret of Joy

Why She’s A Wonderful Writer:
Walker’s works are mostly focused on the struggles of black people, particularly women, and their lives in a racist, sexist, and violent society. Though her the topics used in her novels may be heavy, they serve as good teaching and discussion material for these very subjects. Not only does she practice what she preaches as an activist, but she carries her message out in her writing as well.
The Color Purple is one of my favorite novels and I love the time, period, characters, and epistolary style of writing that Walker uses to tell Celie’s story. She is, without a doubt, one of the most prolific writers of our time.
