Booktube Bites: National Poetry Month Pt. 1
Booktube Bites is a weekly segment in which I spotlight cool bookish videos on the internet. I will discuss some entertaining videos and Booktubers which you can check out. Feel free to participate as well, and send in your own recommendations of videos you would like spotlighted.
Since April is National Poetry Month, I’ll be doing something a little different for Booktube Bites. Instead of bookish videos I’ll celebrating the power of poetry by sharing a couple of my favorite performance videos every week! I hope you will enjoy these poems!
“What Teachers Make” – Taylor Mali
I saw this def poetry performance a long time ago in school when we were discussing poetry in one of my English classes. I love this, because it talks about the how important teachers are to society and that they make a difference. Teachers help kids learn, grow, and so much more. It wasn’t till I myself did student-teaching (for ESL) that I realized how appreciative students can be and all the hard work that goes into being a great teacher.
“To JK Rowling, From Cho Chang” – Rachel Rostad
What a powerful poem! Now I’ve never personally read the Harry Potters books (but will in the future), so I am unsure about Cho as a character in the series. I can’t really comment on Cho, but this poem does bring up the problematic issue of presenting diverse characters in a stereotypical way. I think there is a great need for more diversity in books. Not only do we need more diverse characters, but one that aren’t presented as one-dimensional character or in a superficial way .
Hope you enjoyed these poems and I look forward to sharing more performances next week! Have a great weekend! 🙂
