Today’s Booktube Bite: Romance Novel Stigma
Found On: Rachel Reads
This week’s video from Rachel Reads brings up the discussion of the stigma/stereotypes that surround romance novel. I have to agree with Rachel when she brings up the point that some people don’t think the romance genre is “real” reading and it frustrates me. Since when does someone become the judge of what is “real” reading or not? Instead of making someone feel ashamed about what books they like, we should be promoting reading and literacy as a whole.
This discussion also came up time and time again at the 2015 RT Booklovers Convention. Other and readers and I constantly had discussions about the negativity surrounding romance books. I think if people would keep an open mind they might actually enjoy romance. There are tons of sub-genres to enjoy and romance novels can be just as complex as any other type of novel.
