Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Quotes I Loved From Books I Read In The Past Year Or So
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke And The Bookish. For more info on how to participate in this weekly post or future topics click here.
1) The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George
“Books are more than doctors, of course. Some novels are loving, lifelong companions;some give you a clip around the ear; others are friends who wrap you in warm towels when you’ve got those autumn blues. And some…well, some are pink candy floss that tingles in your brain for three seconds and leaves a blissful voice. Like a short, torrid love affair.”
2) The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler
“When one dream burns to ash, you don’t crumble beneath it. You get on your hands and knees, and you sift through those ashes until you find the very last ember, the very last spark. Then you breathe. You breathe. You fucking breathe. And you make a new fire.”
3) How to Be a Heroine by Samantha Ellis
“I don’t know if I’ll get a happy ending. But why worry about a happy ending? Why worry about any ending at all? I don’t know where I’m going next, and for the first time in forever, I don’t want to. I want my life to be picaresque. Fantastical. I want to say yes and.”
4) Afterworlds by Scott Westerfield
“In a novel you always knew the moment when something Happened, when someone Changed. But real life was full of gradual, piecemeal, continuous transformation. It was full of accidents and undefineables, and things that just happened on their own. The only certainty was ‘It’s complicated,’ whether or not unicorns tolerated your touch.”
5) Rooms by Lauren Oliver
“But that’s the beauty of life: time if yours to keep and to change. Just a few minutes can be sufficient to carve a new road, a new track. Just a few minutes, and the void is kept at bay. You will live forever with that new road inside of you, stretching away to a place suggested, barely, on the horizon. For the shortest time, shorter than the shortest second’s breath, you get to stand up to infinity. But eventually, and always, infinity wins.”
6) Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh
“Fear and shame are the backbone of my self-control. They are my source of inspiration, my insurance against becoming entirely unacceptable. They help me do the right thing. And I am terrified of what I would be without them. Because I suspect that, left to my own devices, I would completely lose control of my life. I’m still hoping that perhaps someday I’ll learn how to use willpower like a real person, but until that very unlikely day, I will confidently battle toward adequacy, wielding my crude skill set of fear and shame.”
7) No-where But Here by Kate McGarry
“There’s a reason why people shouldn’t talk at four in the morning. Exhaustion eliminates the ability to lie. It demolishes the ability to tiptoe around the truth. Emotions are too exposed and real. Heightened to the point of explosion.”
8) Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers
“I am beginning to think that love itself is never wrong. It is what love can drive people to do that is the problem.”
9) I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson
“Meeting your soul mate is like walking into a house you’ve been in before – you will recognize the furniture, the pictures on the wall, the books on the shelves, the contents of drawers: You could find your way around in the dark if you had to.”
10) The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead
“Sometimes it’s worth lingering on the journey for a while before getting to the destination.”
That concludes my top 10 favorite quotes! It was so hard to choose the quotes since I have read so many great books this past year. Plus I read so much, that I can’t always remember which quotes came from certain books. I’m definitely going to have to start writing quotes down more often. 🙂
