Talli, Daughter of the Moon Vol. 1 by Sourya

Publication Date: September 27, 2022

Genre: Fantasy, Graphic Novel

Page Length: 168 pages (electronic review edition)

Synopsis:

Talli is a Summoner: a nearly extinct people, hunted by those who fear their mysterious powers. As a baby, she was adopted by Lord Koska, and all was well for many years… But one day, their castle is sacked by Koska’s rival, Lord Ulric. Talli escapes in the chaos and darkness with the help of the noble (some might say too noble) knight Sir Alan.

With Ulric’s forces hot on her heels, Talli and Alan keep one step ahead, gathering a motley crew of companions and protectors that includes the lethargic-but-incredible swordsman Lélo. Ulric’s Captain Nina pursues them doggedly, but she is unaware of the secret of Talli’s blood: the secret of the Summoners!

Review:

From the very first pages of Talli, readers know they are in for an adventure. Following our main character Talli, she is a nobleman’s daughter who is escaping from the castle due to her magical powers as Summoner. Now almost extinct, Summoners have a grand power that mystifies followers of the Moon Goddess and scares others. Lord Ulric and his knights determine Talli must be stopped and off she must travel to find refuge along with her knight, Alan, and other companions along the way. What will happen next?

Talli is a thrilling story and the first volume does an excellent job of setting up the background while also being action-packed. Readers are whisked from a forbidden forest to secret hideouts while travleling by wagon (with enemies on their trail). It’s a true adventure story where you never know just what is waiting around the corner, and every moment takes you by surprise. I think one true element of any story such as this is that the novel peaks a high sense of curiosity and constantly keeps you on your toes. It was so entertaining to read and immersive.

Talli, herself, seems like an elusive main character, but by the end of volume one, we get a better feeling for her personality and backstory. She has always dreamed of a life outside of the castle due to being sheltered and this journey is a way for her to explore and grow as a person. I loved the group as a whole and the rag-tag team reminded me of reading other adventure stories such as Fullmetal Alchemist. the author herself stated that she was inspired by Japanese RPG games and it’s very reflected in the art and narrative. The artwork is so stunning I found myself mesmerized by some of the panels and as whole, it immerses you into the story. I can’t wait to see what will happen next in volume two!

TW: Death, Violence

Final Verdict:

    1. Not too sure about this title. The second volume just got released in French so I suppose the next volume will come out sometime next year?
