Bibliophile Tips: How Take of Your Book Collection

Hello everyone! I’m back with another round of Bibliophile Tips! Today I’ll be chatting about some tips to help you take of your book collection and keep your books in great condition.

Dust Them Regularly

Keep the books clean by using a soft brush or microfiber cloth to gently remove dust from covers, spines, and page edges. Not only does it keep the books pristine but it makes you books look shiny and neat!

Keep Them From Direct Sunlight

Ultraviolet and visible light can speed up the deterioration of paper and cause fading or discoloration of the vibrant colors of book covers or dust jackets. This is the most common way (for me) I’ve damaged books in the past. Just like artwork sunlight is not good for books

Shelve Them Upright

Stacking books horizontally can place undue pressure on book spines, which I’ve learned the hard way for some of the books I own. Ideally most books should be stored in the upright position anyway and I find it’s also good for maximizing the most space on your bookshelves.

Support Them With Bookends

Stacks of books can slid and tip over while bookends offer support in keeping books secure. I recommend these when you are storing or showcasing books on your desk. Plus they make great décor to make your bookish space look cozy.

Regulate The Temperature

The most important thing you can do is to avoid storing books in areas where there are extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations. That means avoiding basements, attics, and locations near steamy bathrooms. Moisture can cause your books to swell, encourage mildew or mold growth. I like to place a moisture absorber on top of my shelves to keep my book pages from becoming warped.
