Review:
An indie bookshop in a cozy small town? ✔
An adorable litter of puppies? ✔
A swoon-worthy romance? ✔
The Bookshop Rescue spoke to the book lover in me from the very first time I saw the cover art down to the synopsis. Taking place in a small town in Virginia, the novel follows Lucy, the owner of Chapter One bookstore. Chapter One instantly reminded me of the welcoming vibes of my own local indie book shops with their welcoming atmosphere and variety of books. Lucy is a protagonist trying to rebuild her life while fostering mom-to-be dog Buttercup while sharing her love of books with the town around her. But when a romance with a small business owner next door (Calum) sets off a spark will that mean happily ever after for the both of them?
First of all this book felt like “Chicken Soup for the Soul”. I read this novel during a very stressful week and it was just the pick-me-up story that I needed to boost my spirits. It’s more on the sweet side of romance since it has an overall cozy read vibe, but I think that’s what made it so enjoyable. The romance is fast-paced, but I could tell that their relationship had grown stronger by the beginning of this story (since the story takes place in a larger series). Adding in the abundance of curious and cute puppies and this romance was even sweeter.
Though their relationship moves quite quickly over the course of the story I appreciated Calum’s and Lucy’s willingness to break down their walls and talk with each other. Both are healing from painful pasts with their parents and past relationships which have prevented them from moving on to the future. Plus I thoroughly enjoyed the community of neighbors and small businesses Lucy and Calum get to interact with. It seems like a fun small town to live in.
Overall, my only complaint is that I wish the book was longer, but I think this book is an entertaining cozy read that will appeal to the bibliophile and those that enjoy sweet romance novels.

It was a cute read. Alers has a large backlist and is a notable romance novelist. I definitely want to dive into some of her other titles in the future.
