Favorite standalone book hauled and read so far in 2019

Though this novel is a few years older, I wanted to read it since my eyes are always drawn to the cover art when I pass my bookshelves. It was such a fun story full of magic, death-defying circus acts, and a mystery. (See review here)

Favorite series that I started or continued to read in 2019

I was really impressed by the first book in the Pingkang Li mystery series that I bought the second book in a recent Harlequin sale. It’s equal parts mystery and romance, and the the balance of those two genres worked really well in this book. (See review here)

Favorite bookish items purchased or received this year

I haven’t really bought any for myself.

Favorite debut author

I enjoyed Natasha Diaz’s book so much! It’s a strong debut novel about identity, race, religion, growing up, and so much more. I loved the way it was written and the book has a powerful message. I would definitely read more from this author. (See review here)

Favorite under-hyped book that I read this year

I can’t think of any books in this category. Most of my reads in 2019 have been older releases.

Favorite book read this year that you were late to the party on

Everyone was talking this book when it was released in Fall 2018 and I just got around to reading it this month. I’m a bit late when it comes to reading “hyped” books, but I’m glad I read it. Reading this book made me want to get back into the mystery genre.

Potential favorite that you haven’t gotten around to reading yet

I can’t wait to read this ARC! I love the cover art and the story seems like something I would enjoy. It’s about a girl who’s school presentation goes wrong and  finds herself suspended, shipped off to Haiti and writing the report of a lifetime.

Favorite re-read in 2019

I don’t really re-read books at all. I was hoping to revisit a old favorite this year, but my schedule has been so intense that I haven’t been able to.

Favorite cover on a book released this year

This cover is not only bright and colorful, but I really feel like it reflects the story well. The typography is simple, but I love the cute illustrations of food and San Francisco, where the story takes place. (See review here)

(Optional) Favorite book box this year

Book of the Month is first book subscription box I’ve ever subscribed to and I like it so far. I’m a bit behind on reading the books I’ve picked out, but I like that it’s simple and the variety of new releases that I can get.
