RUGRATS: FIND A BOOK THAT IS A NOSTALGIC READ
Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne It’s a series that transported kids through time and around the world while teaching them about history. It really jumpstarted my love for the fantasy genre as a kid. The time travel aspects were so cool to me.
DOUG: FIND A BOOK ABOUT GROWING UP
Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova. This middle-grade graphic novel follows the life of Peppi Torres and her adventures at school. It’s a tale that is relatable to a wide audience, but it’s geared toward younger readers. It has themes of growing up and feeling awkward.
JOHNNY BRAVO: FIND A BOOK WHOSE MAIN CHARACTER YOU DON’T LIKE
Holden from Catcher in the Rye. I think other readers share the same sentiment.
SOUTH PARK: FIND A BOOK WITH QUESTIONABLE HUMOR
That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming. This story is romance at its core, but I love the high adventure aspect of the novel. The story takes us through Cinnamon’s journey with Fallon from her small village through scary swamps, mysterious islands, and more. It’s action-packed and full of witty banter. The comedy aspect really took me for a loop.
POWERPUFF GIRLS: FIND A BOOK WITH A KICK-BUTT FEMALE LEAD
Heroine Complex by Sara Kuhn. I loved the fantasy elements where Kuhn describes all the supernatural aspects in a detailed manner. It made the action-packed scenes gripping and throughout the entire novel, I was eager to see where the story would take me next. The main character becomes a strong heroine growing into her superhero powers.
ROCKET POWER: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORT-CENTERED BOOK SCENE?
I don’t have a favorite scene, but I loved reading From Lukov With Love by Mariana Zapata. This book is wonderful from the descriptions of the graceful art of skating on ice to the character development. I love the grumpy hero and heroine (Jasmine and Ivan) and their constant banter, reconnection, and seeing them grow as a pair on and off the ice. The characters were the strongest point of the novel for me, and I like how the book navigates the career of a figure skater through their own words.
FUTURAMA: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SCI-FI BOOK?
I don’t have just one favorite book, but one that left a deep impression on me is Kindred. Octavia Butler paints a very real portrait of history, and this book shows many horrors of the past. Dana’s journey is many things: harrowing, terrifying, visceral, and difficult to read at times. Octavia E. Butler is a fantastic writer and I loved how she created the characters, attention to detail, crafted the plot, and explored race through a Sci-Fi lens.
