I recently won this book in a giveaway by Naz from Read Diverse Books and I can’t wait to read it. The story follows a girl named Juliet, who comes out to her family, leaves home, and goes on a journey.

Find a book with a Muslim protagonist.

Ms. Marvel by G. Willow Wilson (writer) and (artist) Adrian Alphona

Kamala Khan is one of my favorite new superheros who is breaking barriers by being Marvel’s first Muslim character to headline her own comic book. The story is action-packed, fun, and I like how it discusses cultural identity.

Find a book set in Latin America.

The Little School by Alicia Partnoy

This short fictionalized novel tells the story of the author’s disappearance during the Dirty War in Argentina. It’s heartbreaking and very real.

Find a book about a person with a disability.

The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson

Though the main character of the story, Hayley, doesn’t have a disability, it was heartbreaking to read her story. She cares for her dad who suffers from PTSD, while trying to live a normal life. Anderson is fantastic at tackling heavy issues in a number of her books.

Find a Science-Fiction or Fantasy book with a POC protagonist.

Santa Muerte (The Daniela Story #1) by Lucina Stone

Santa Muerte is an interesting novel that is a good combination of fantasy, magic, and mystery. It’s fast paced and fans of stories with time travel or historical elements will definitely enjoy this story.

Find a book set in (or about) any country in Africa.

And After Many Days by Jowhor Ile

This story surrounds the event of a boy’s disappearance and how it changes a family’s dynamic. While the story had an interesting plot, it was a bit too slow-paced for me, but I think other readers will enjoy it.

Find a book written by an Indigenous or Native author.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

I have been wanting to read this book for a while now. It’s sitting in my TBR pile and I’m looking forward to reading it since I’ve heard so many good things about it.

Find a book set in South Asia (Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc.).

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

This by far one of my favorite novels of all time even though the story is incredibly sad. It’s a great coming of age story and I liked how the themes connect Western readers to a foreign experience in a relatable way.

Find a book with a biracial protagonist.

The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig

Nix, the main character of the The Girl From Everywhere is biracial, but on top of that (most of) the cast is so diverse as they come from different time periods and cultures. It’s awesome! Plus who wouldn’t want to read about pirates and time travel?!

Find a book starring a transgender character or about transgender issues.

Being Jazz by Jazz Jennings

I’ve known about Jazz Jennings for a while and wanted read more about her story after watching her TV show. She is notable for being for being the youngest person to become a national transgender figure.
