Today’s Topic: Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag

Iced Drink – A Refreshing Book

This novel packs a heavy punch from the beginning! Told through multiple point-of-views, the narrative is constantly shifting between characters and periods of time. The novel mainly follows two best friends, Ruby and Layla, who live on the South Side of Chicago. I loved the social commentary within the story and multiple povs. (Review)

Cotton Candy – A book that was fluffy and sweet

It’s an entertaining novel with a road trip, enemies-to-lovers trope, lots of humor, and steamy romance! Plus how cute is this cover design?! I’m looking forward to reading more books from Mimi Grace in the future.

Sunglasses – A dark book

This was a steamy, but very dark romance. It’s an emotional roller coaster of a read too. Their is a lot of pain embedded in the past for the two main leads. They have to try clear the air between the two of them in a forced proximity situation. (Review)

Picnic on a Rainy Day – A sad book

This novel deals with not only story about family and survival, but also a book about grief. This book spreads awareness about a dark part of history while also weaving a narrative of two sisters with unbreakable bond. It’s a heartbreaking story and is a very difficult read. (Review)

Sand – A book that irritated you

While I’ve read many predictable manga because of the tropes, this one just has no substance. I think the overall problem was the story and character fell very flat. There’s nothing to hook the reader into wanting to continue reading the story.

Summer Blockbuster – Favorite book-to-screen adaptation

I watched the movie last year before reading the book this year. This is one of my most favorite recent adaptions. I like how the adapted the book for the screenplay and the casting. Both reading the book and watching the movie was very close in similarity for me.

Dropped Ice Cream- a you were anticipating, but it wasn’t good

This novel follows the story of three sisters: Liza, Maggie, and Tricia who have come together after the death of their father. I felt a bit bored by this book. I think the reason I had trouble reading this novel, because I couldn’t connect with it at times. Additionally, the story fell flat in some parts. (Review)

Palm Tree – A tall book you loved

I honestly couldn’t think of anything for this category, so I’m going to skip it.

Bonfire – A book you want to burn

While the plot is interesting, it’s so slow moving that sometimes I would lose interest in the story. I felt that the book is entirely too long and that many parts could have been cut down. I found some of the things to be included in this book to be extremely unsettling and I think it should be marketed as an adult novel more so than YA. (Review)

Fireworks – A book that exploded onto the scene

I’m picking a recent release for this prompt. I just read this collection of essays and I loved it so much. It’s a humorous and thought-provoking read which opens a deeper conversation about race and Black Women in the media.
