Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hello my name is Rachel! I’ve been running this blog since 2013 and I love to read a wide variety of genres. When I’m not reading I love to watch TV/Movies, listen to music, and craft art projects. I love gardening, Anime, and I am a huge K-pop fan.
Who’s a black author you love that a lot of people don’t know about?
I really like Jasmine Silvera! Her fantasy novels are so entertaining and so action-packed!
Favorite book about the black experience?
This is a book that is talked about a lot, but it’s book that meant a lot to me. I like that Thomas’ language is gritty and real, she doesn’t scoot around the hard issues and takes everything head on. I appreciated all the dialogue she created by tying it to various issues: race, police brutality, poverty, oppression, and so much more. It was solid commentary on the real world and having relatable characters made it easy for readers for readers to digest.
Favorite book by a black author?
I can’t just pick one favorite so I’ll pick a recent read for this prompt. I enjoyed this book so much. The romance was swoon worthy, but I also like that the plot dug into deeper topics to give it a realistic feel instead of straying away from difficult subjects. I binge read it in a few days!
Recommend a black + queer book.
This novel follows the story of Torrey a black teenager who is a first generation college student in his family. His excitement for this new journey is dampened when he finds out the bee apiary back home is being sold. He’s got a lot of growing up to do and he’s trying to process a lot of stuff. He’s vulnerable, feels conflicted, struggles with his sexuality, but most importantly also stands up for what he believes in.
Recommend a book with a black person on the cover.
This book hit me real hard, but it’s an important narrative that needs to be told. Because the story had such heavy content, it really stuck with me. The narration style was so good! It was hard to read to at times, but it’s an important narrative about missing Black girls/children cases in the US.
Recommend a book by a Black author that makes you happy.
Vanessa’s story of winning the pageant is not only a journey of self discovery of the woman she wants to become but also a journey of self-love. She shows us that it’s not always easy to love yourself since people have a tendency to pick out all of their faults. She also shows readers to cherish what gifts you have.
Talk about a book by a Black author that’s coming in 2020.
Just from the description alone I am excited to read this book! It sounds like will be an empowering novel, plus I love the graffiti style cover art!

This is the first I’ve heard of Jasmine Silvera. I’ll look her up.
Her books are pretty good! I need to finish the series, but I recommend her Death’s Dancer novels.
