Today’s Topic: The District Tag
Found On: City of YA Books
District 1 Luxury: Pick a book with lots of opulence.
This novel is a great balance of the aristocracy/ 1900s era mixed with elements of fantasy. There are princesses, royalty, and even highly esteemed sorcerers. The cover not only gives off an aura of opulence, but so does the wardrobe of the characters and the novel’s setting.
District 2 Masonry/ weaponry: pick a book with a great war or conflict.
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini tells the story of two young boys Amir, a Pashtun Muslim, and his best friend Hassan, a Hazara servant, in Kabul, Afghanistan. Amir and his father are forced to flee to the United States after the fall of Afghanistan’s monarchy through the Soviet military (hence war). Plus the story is centered around the conflict that tears Hassan and Amir’s friendship apart.
District 3 Technology: Pick a book with a technological twist.
The novel has a technological twist because two teens get access to their own Facebook pages in the late 90s. Facebook hasn’t been invented yet and they get the opportunity to look at themselves fifteen years in the future. The two try to change their future to their liking, by preventing things that will happen.
District 4 Fishing: Pick a water based book.
Water So Deep tells the story of Emma, a changeling (mermaid) who is dealing with her departure from her human life and the upcoming transition into her new sea life. It takes place around a beach, so pretty self-explanatory.
District 5 Electricity: Pick a powerful book.
This book tells the story of Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled adult who cleans floors and toilets, becomes a genius through an experimental operation. This story is not physically powerful, but it does take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. You really do feel for Charlie and the daily struggles he deals with.
District 6 Transportation: Pick a book that takes place in many locations.
In this novel, our main protagonists is Ellie, has not given up on her sister after her two-year disappearance. She finds a mysterious drawing that will take her on a cross-country road trip. It’s a fun suspenseful novel that takes readers to places across the US.
District 7 Lumber: Pick a book with manual labor.
This book is the first novel in the Chaos Walking series. Todd Hewitt is the only boy left in Prentisstown, a small settlement on ‘New World’ where all boys become men after thirteen cycles of thirteen months. Even though it’s a dystopian series, the novel is set in a rural place so there is lots of farming, and other manual labor.
District 8 Textiles: Pick a book with amazing clothes!
Though Becky Bloomwood has a shopping addiction, she is still without a doubt, a fashionista! She’s always buying fun and fabulous outfits. I wish I could go shopping with her!
District 9 Grain: Pick a book where food is hard to come by.
This novel he story centers on ten-year-old Annemarie, who lives with her family in Copenhagen in 1943. She becomes a part of the events related to the rescue of the Danish Jews. There are lots of scare resources in this novel, and it’s such a powerful story.
District 10 Livestock: Pick a book with an animal in it.
In this second installment of the Knight Games series, Grateful obtains her familiar Poe, a black Raven. Though he can be snarky and ever so sarcastic, he is still got Grateful’s back in times of trouble and is always there to lend a hand.
District 11 Agriculture: Pick a book where a character comes to a harsh gritty reality.
In this well-known novel, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. Sayuri lives a troubled life from childhood to adulthood. Mainly this is because of being sold into the geisha life, but she also deals with: society’s standards at that time, becoming a woman, falling into love, and learning how to be her own person.
District 12 Mining: Pick a dark and sinister book!
The Secrets of Life and Death is a story that takes readers into the past and present. The story is full of many secrets, black magic, and dark history.
