Book Tag Thursday: The Monster Mash Book Tag

Welcome to my segment where I find awesome book tags throughout the vast, wide interwebs made by lovely bloggers like you! I hope you’ll have fun and participate with me as well!

Today’s Topic: The Monster Mash Book Tag

Created By: Thoughts on Papyrus

I was working in the lab late one night. What’s a book that kept you up at night?

The collection consists of four stories and each story brings its own uniqueness to the collection while all equally being spine-tingling. The stories are digestible and like with most of Ito’s works the grotesque yet sometimes beautiful art is what sticks with you long after finishing his stories.

My eyes beheld and eerie sight. What is the weirdest or creepiest shit you’ve ever read in a book?

What set this book apart from other “ghost stories” is that the book is told from the perspective of Okiku (the ghost) and it works very well for this type of story. It was unique for me to read the book from this view as it is usually told from the ones being haunted. I loved the attention to detail for the horror, description of the undead, subtle jump-scares, and how Chupeco makes the reader feel uneasy but eager to find out the mystery of Tarquin’s curse and it’s background. The tie into the origins of Yurei (ghosts) in Japan was interesting to read about.

Get a jolt from my electrodes. Name a book that completely shocked or surprised you.

What a fantastic, spooky, and unsettling horror novel. Douglass does a fantastic job of creative an mysterious ambiance adding the smallest details to enhance the horror aspects of this novel. If this novel was a movie I would be on the edge of my seat from the imagery of bloody wraiths, ominous mists rising from the ground and haunting nightmares Jake experiences.

The guests included Wolfman, Dracula, and his son. Name your favorite monster or villain from a book.

If you like stories of witches, werewolves, and magic then Monster Born is an urban fantasy that you should check out. I love retellings of classics especially horror and this spin on Frankenstein’s monster feels fresh. The story is entertaining from beginning to end. The main character may seem like a monster, but he’s actually the hero in this story instead of a villain.

Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist? Name a book that was super hyped when it came out, but no one talks about anymore.

Courtney is a young girl who lives in a spooky old house with her family and estranged uncle. But this new move proves to be a turning point in her life as she delves into magic and goes head-to-head with goblins in the dead of night. Naifeh creates this eerie atmosphere to put you in Courtney’s footsteps.

They did the mash. Name your favorite book that is a mash up of two or more genres.

Not a horror book, but recent read is one of my favorite blends of romance and fantasy. The novel whisks readers away to world that blends fantasy with the mundane as Liska, the main character seeks answers to getting rid of her magic deep within a spirit-wood. What she finds in a demon named the Leszy and a place full of secrets that she must uncover to find out the truth.

It was a graveyard smash. What is your favorite horror novel?

Though the stories for me are chilling due to urban legends and folktales being told what really got me as a child is the drawings. I can’t forget them and adding these pictures to each story only made it more terrifying to read. Though they were scary tales I couldn’t stop reading them and devouring each book. The visuals even scare me as a grown adult, but I still love these books.

The scene was rockin’, all were digging the sounds: What’s your favorite song based on a book?

This song is loosely inspired by Ray Bradbury’s touching short story The Rocket Man.

Tell them Boris sent you: What is your go-to book recommendation?

It has all of the formulaic bits of a haunted house story, but Coates adds some unique elements to make the story entertaining. It was one of those novels that I thought I had figured out and then the plot did a 180 degree spin on me. Coates is a very detailed writer which made this such an immersive reading experience. A fantastic spine-tingling tale.

For you, the living, this mash was meant too: Who do you tag?

Anyone who wants to participate.

Bonus question: What is your favorite thing about Halloween?

The décor! I love seeing how creative everyone gets with indoor and outdoor decorations!

  1. Of course you like the decor most! Me too, I suppose. Some years I enjoy the creepy reading more than the decor, but this year I have only just started to read some creepy stuff (I’ve been shying away from it, last year and until now, but I’m slowly getting back into it. I thought the Courtney Crumrin books were super fun. But Ryan Douglass’s book here is the one I’d probably snatch up first (in my reading mood of the moment).
