Today’s Video: YA Hate

This week’s video is a bookish discussion headed by Booktuber Trish from the channel “Paperback Prima Donna”. In the video she discusses what she thinks it means when someone says they hate YA fiction. She goes into issues such as making a generalization about an entire book genre and not being an open-minded reader.

I agreed with a lot of the points that Trish makes throughout the video. Often I find that when people make generalizations about any genre the person has either:

  • a) put in their mind they’re not going to like it before they even give it a chance
  • b) read one book in the genre which they didn’t like and refuses to try another book in the same genre

When it comes to being a reader I (personally) feel that you need to be open-minded. Without trying new genres or different styles of writing, it’s hard to evolve as a person. Reading not only helps to nurture the mind, but is also a way to grow and learn more about the world that surrounds you. Being narrow minded it doesn’t help you, it hurts you.

Question of the week: How do you feel about “YA Hate”? Comment below with your thoughts?

Have a great weekend and happy reading! 🙂

  1. I realize some genres are not for everyone but I totally agree with you! How can someone form a thoughtful and insightful opinion without trying it out?! And more than one YA novel. And more than that one popular YA novel. The diversity within genres is so vast. Thank you for sharing this booktuber and your insights on the subject as well!
