Favorite Supernatural TV Shows!
Hello! As Halloween approaches I’ve been thinking of some spook-tastic posts that I could share with you all during the month of October. Today, I’ll be sharing some of favorite supernatural themed TV shows that I’ve enjoyed over the years.
Akuryo Byoto (Demon Ward)
Synopsis: Set within a hospital, located on the outskirts of town, mysterious phenomenons occur in sequence around a nurse. The nurse is suspected as the cause for some horrible cases and finds herself in danger.
If you are familiar with Japanese horror films, then this drama will have your spine tingling. The main character unluckily attracts the supernatural and her presence brings out the creepiest of ghosts. This was the first horror drama I ever watched and boy did the visuals made me squirm. The build up of tension in every scene definitely added to the atmosphere.
Supernatural
Synopsis: Two brothers follow their father’s footsteps as “hunters” fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth.
Supernatural is one of my favorite shows of all time. It’s equal parts horror, drama, and comedy all mixed into one show. The chemistry between the two lead actors, Jensen and Padlecki, and the rest of the cast are undeniable. It’s what makes the acting so enjoyable and the fandom so great. Some of the paranormal creatures featured in the earlier seasons had me spooked.
Ghost Hunt
Synopsis: This show follows high school student named Mai Taniyama, who works for Kazuya Shibuya (Naru), the young president of Shibuya Psychic Research. Along the way, she meets his silent assistant, a Monk, a shrine maiden, an Australian priest, a TV medium, and a young, intelligent researcher–and, of course, a few ghosts! The series focuses on a range of supernatural and psychic phenomena, as well as religion, particularly in Japanese culture.
If you put any ghost hunting show into anime, Ghost Hunt is what you get. It gets a little repetitive in its explanation of the tools used in their ghost hunting trips, but other than that the show is great. The episodes are fast paced and the SPR team brings a variety of talents and entertaining personalities to each case. While the spook factor starts out light in the episodes, each case becomes more dangerous and scary as the show moves along.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Synopsis: A young woman is forced to fulfill her destiny of fighting vampires and demons with the help of her friends all the while struggling to live a normal teenage life of heart-break and drama.
What list of supernatural shows could be complete without Buffy?! She’s a kick-ass teenager who puts vampires and demons in their place. I watched this show all the time growing up and the best episodes for me are where Buffy and crew are in high school. I like that the show is action-packed and full of drama. This show is must watch for any fans of supernatural shows.
Vampire Prosecutor
Synopsis: Prosecutor Min Tae-Yeon is bitten by somebody he doesn’t and becomes a vampire. Tae-Yeon rejects the life of a vampire and he survives by drinking the blood of dead people and still lives as a righteous prosecutor .He also uses his new-found abilities as a vampire to prosecute powerful persons normally thought above the law.
Okay, so the title might not be great and the concept might be weird, but trust in me when I say this a truly awesome show. Just think of this show as vampires mixed with Criminal Minds/Law and Order. The casting is superb and the writing is solid throughout the first season (I have yet to watch season two). It has a lot of suspense to keep viewers on edge and action so that it isn’t too dull.
Crazyhead
Synopsis: Amy and Raquel attempt to navigate their way through the choppy waters of their early twenties whilst simultaneously kicking the ass of some seriously gnarly demons. What could possibly go wrong?
This show is similar to Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but with raunchy dialogue. It’s hilarious and each episode is equally action packed as well. Part of what makes this show so entertaining besides its dialogue and plot are the leading actresses Cara Theobold and Susan Wokoma! They have amazing chemistry on-screen With anyone else playing these roles, I don’t think this duo would have been as dynamic. The best part of this show is that it’s horror infused with tons of comedy!
Gravity Falls
Synopsis: The series follows the adventures of Dipper Pines and his twin sister Mabel who are sent to spend the summer with their great-uncle (or “Grunkle”) Stan, in a mysterious town full of paranormal forces and supernatural creatures. The kids help Stan run “The Mystery Shack”, the tourist trap that he owns, while also investigating the local mysteries.
Gravity Falls has a special place in my heart! It’s one of the few new wave (animated) Disney shows that I enjoy wholeheartedly. It has action, the mysteries surrounding the town are spooky, and the characters are so much fun. What I like about this show it’s that it’s a clever cartoon. So many cartoons rely on cheap gimmicks, but Gravity Falls felt thought-out and it shows in its plot deveopmeny. This show has the perfect amount of spook and is family friendly.
The Twilight Zone
Synopsis: This television anthology series created by Rod Serling. The episodes are in various genres, including psychological horror, fantasy, science fiction, suspense, and psychological thriller, often concluding with a macabre or unexpected twist, and usually with a moral.
The Twilight Zone is an absolutely classic that everybody should watch. Some episode are creepier than others (I still shudder when I think about that “Talking Tina” episode) a lot of them are though-provoking. Many of the episodes are based on real world topics or things that leave you deep in lot. If you like your horror a bit light, I’d recommend this show to you.
The Master’s Sun
Synopsis: Joo Joong-won is the stingy and greedy CEO of Kingdom, a conglomerate that includes a major department store and hotel. He meets the gloomy Tae Gong-shil who started seeing ghosts after an accident. Their lives take a new turn as they work together to deal with the terror and sadness brought about by the spirits, while delving into a kidnapping incident in Joong-won’s past.
This drama is in my ultimate top ten list for k-dramas (a statement I do not take lightly). It may seem like your typical rich guy, poor woman drama, but when ghosts are added to the mix it changes things. It’s a romance and horror drama, which sounds contradicting but it works. The plot is solid through and through, and the constant pop up of Gong-shil’s unsuspecting undead visitors add the jump-scare factor.
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Synopsis: This series revolved around a group of teenagers who referred to themselves as “The Midnight Society.” Every week, at a secret location in the woods, one member would tell a scary story to the group.
I’m sorry Goosebumps, but this show was 1000x times scarier. The intro alone had me on edge with its eerie imagery and unsightly music. This of this show as spooky campfire tales intensified. Though the show could be cheesy at times it was pretty scary. It offered a variety of stories from killer mannequins to scary clowns. Yet I couldn’t stop watching.

Outer Limits was a big favourite of mine growing up. And The X-Files in my 20s. More recently, I’ve enjoyed the earlier seasons of American Horror Story (I’m watching Hotel these days, behind as usual) and Wayward Pines (which I think is like X-Files-creepy). I’ve been thinking about watching “Ozark” but am trying to finish a few series before I start more! (It’s not as bad as it is with books, but it’s getting messy!)
I love American Horror Story. My favorites seasons are Coven (S3) and Murder House (S1). I couldn’t get into Hotel so I stopped watching it. I’ve also never watched the X-Files. I feel like I’m missing out.
I have a feeling that watching the original XFiles would be like watching the original Star Trek). So I’m not sure you are missing out after all. I’m having trouble with AHS Hotel, actually; in other seasons, I couldn’t wait to get back to them, once I started watching, but with this one I am having a hard time settling into the idea/scene. I’ve watched two; if I don’t change my mind after two more, I’ll move onto the next season, I guess…
