Galentine’s Day Movie Recommendations 2.0!

As you all might know Galentine’s Day, celebrated on February 13th! It’s a unofficial holiday that spawned from an episode from the show Parks and Recreation and every year it seems to get bigger. It’s a day for “ladies celebrating ladies” so in honor of it, I’m sharing some of my favorite movies about female friendship! Enjoy these picks!

Bridesmaids

Synopsis: Annie is a single woman whose own life is a mess, but when she learns that her lifelong best friend, Lillian, is engaged, she has no choice but to serve as the maid of honor. Though lovelorn and almost penniless, Annie, nevertheless, winds her way through the strange and expensive rituals associated with her job as the bride’s go-to gal. Determined to make things perfect, she gamely leads Lillian and the other bridesmaids down the wild road to the wedding.

This one of my favorite go-to movies when I need a feel-good film to watch! From beginning to end it’s full of many crazy antics and hilarious dialogue that keeps me laughing me throughout the whole film. I enjoyed that even though after all the disasters the crew goes through to make sure Lillian’s wedding goes smoothly, they become an even closer group of friends.

Caramel

Synopsis: A beauty salon in Beirut is a safe haven for five women in this Lebanese romantic comedy. Shop owner Layale consults her employees about a problematic affair, stylist Rima does not know how to handle her attraction to a female client, and seamstress Rose abandons her own ambitions to care for her family. With the support of their friends in their familiar salon, the women search for the answers to questions of life, love and happiness.

Though this is more of a romantic comedy film than friendship focused I still enjoyed the intersection of theses women’s lives and how their friendship is strengthened. Each character goes through their own struggles and the salon becomes a place a solace for each of these women to share their thoughts and get advice. They become a family in some way. It’s got some sad moments, but it’s a heartfelt film with a great story.

Mamma Mia

Synopsis: Donna , an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day.

I love musicals, and this is one of my favorite movie musicals. I was obsessed with ABBA’s music as a kid so whenever I watch this film I always dance along to the music. I love to see the sisterhood and friendship between Donna, Tonya, and Rosie. Even though they don’t see each other that often their friendship is so tight-knit that they pick up right where they left off.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Synopsis: On one of trapped housewife Evelyn Couch’s Wednesday nursing home visits, she encounters Ninny Threadgoode , a colorful old woman who brightens Evelyn’s outlook by sharing tales from her past. As Ninny recounts the exploits of her free-spirited sister-in-law Idgie, owner of a small Alabama café in the 1920s, and the bond Idgie shared with her friend Ruth, Evelyn gains the confidence to change her own life for the better.

This film is fun, entertaining, and emotional as well. (I’m pretty sure I cried the first time I saw this film). It’s a story about a friendship that develops between Evelyn and Ninny while Ninny recounts her past. I love period movies and I liked the transition from the past to the present as the story unfolds.

Nana

Synopsis: Nana is about the relationship between two young women who are both named Nana. Although their names are the same, their lives are completely different. One of them, Nana Osaki, is an ambitious punk who is looking to break into the world of rock and roll, while the other, Nana “Hachi” Komatsu, simply wants a new life with her boyfriend, Shoji Endo. After moving to Tokyo while chasing their hopes and dreams, their lives greatly change after meeting each other.

This is one of the best live-action adaptations of a manga/anime series, in my opinion. It’s a story about unlikely friendship that blooms between two very different women named Nana. It’s a coming of age story where both women find their own paths in the city of Tokyo and while becoming best friends. It’s real, sometimes gritty, real, and has a story that is full of heart. Plus the soundtrack is amazing!

Sister Act

Synopsis: When lively lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier sees her mobster beau, Vince LaRocca, commit murder, she is relocated for her protection. Set up in the guise of a nun in a California convent, Deloris proceeds to upend the quiet lives of the resident sisters. In an effort to keep her out of trouble, they assign Deloris to the convent’s choir, an ensemble that she soon turns into a vibrant and soulful act that gains widespread attention.

Sister Act is a movie that I can watch anytime, anywhere. I never get tired off it. I love the fish out of water theme of how Deloris finds her place in a convent and strikes up a friendship with the nuns. Despite her reservations about her placement in the witness protection program she makes the best of it and helps the the choir grow in popularity. The soundtrack is a classic and I love the hilarious dialogue and action-packed scenes.
