What I’m Listening To…Girl Power Vol.2!

Hello readers! I love listening to music of all genres on a daily basis. I can’t go a day without popping on some headphones and listening to some upbeat tunes while I dance around my room or relax from a long day by listening to calming songs. In my segment “What I’m Listening To” I share some of my favorite song picks with you in a mini-playlist consisting of five tracks.

Since March is Women’s History Month I’d thought I’d continue the celebration by making of playlist of music’s leading ladies. To see my previou list for the past year click here. In the previous years I’ve covered my favorite female duos and modern girl groups. This year I decided to focus retro/classic girl groups(60s through the 80s)! Enjoy!

1) Come See About Me by The Supremes

When the word “girl group” comes to mind, immediately I think of The Supremes. They were graceful, had bomb-tastic outfits, and their musical style was unique. They harmonize really well with one another and they have a huge playlist of hits. The Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown’s acts and I can definitely see why.

2) I’m So Excited by The Pointer Sisters

The Pointer Sisters are an American R&B singing group who achieved mainstream success during the 1970s and 1980s. Spanning over four decades, they have experimented with many sounds including  pop, disco, jazz, electronic music, bebop, blues, soul, funk, dance, country and rock. I love how diverse in sound this group is and every time I hear “I’m So Excited”. It gets me pumped to start my day.

3) Dancing in the Street by Martha and the Vandellas

Martha and the Vandellas were an American all-female vocal group formed in 1957. Ten Vandellas songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including two R&B number ones, and six Top Ten Pop Hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Though the group has an overall doo-wop sound I love the brass instruments in “Dancing in the Street”. It gives it such a funky feel!

4) Cruel Summer by Bananarama

This British female pop music vocal group was formed in London in 1981. Their success on both pop and dance charts has earned them a listing in the Guinness World Records as the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world. They definitely have a “cool” vibe to their look and music. I also like they sing as a trio rather than harmonize, it gives their music a fun sound!

5) We Are Family by Sister Sledge

What a classic jam! I never get tired of hearing this song and every time I hear it I want to get up and dance! 😀  Formed in 1971, the group consisted of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge. Symbolizing strong family values, the siblings achieved international success at the height of the disco era.

I hope you enjoyed this playlist! Who are your favorite (more) modern girl groups and which songs do you like the most? Comment below!
