January- March Book Haul: I Need Another Bookshelf Edition
It’s 2021! A brand new year calls for new additions to my bookshelves (as always) and continuing to unhaul books that no longer spark joy. I’m still focusing on tackling those books on my physical and digital shelves. I don’t think I’ve been back to my local library since before Covid hit in March 2020. It’s forced to put those backlist titles on a higher priority.
As for this haul, I planned on not buying as many books, but then February (my birthday month) came and I splurged a bit on some bookish discounts. 95% of these books I’ve found were on sale. I must be some kind of book discount whisperer, lol. Anyways I’ve added some newer-to-me genres to my stacks such as cozy mysteries (which have been more appealing to me now than ever) and more middle-grade fiction.
I think I need to invest in a larger bookshelf as soon as possible because having the smaller shelves just doesn’t work anymore. Onto the book haul!
Bought
Haunted Homicide by Lucy Ness – A cover buy! A ghost story and a cozy mystery all in one.
A Case of Bier by Mary Daheim – A bargain book find with an amateu sleuth as its lead character.
Skull Faced Bookseller Vol.1 by Honda-san – I’ve raved about this anime so much I bought the manga. It was one of the birthday book purchases I made.
Bloodstains with Bronte by Katherine Bolger Hyde – I was intrigued by the title alone.
You in Five Acts by Una La Marche – Una tends to be an auto-buy author for me so when I found this book on a clearance shelf I picked it up. I love her contemporary YA novels.
Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen – A very anticipated read for me. I heard so many positive reviews of this novel. I found it at Barnes & Noble for 50% off.
Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Toni Tomi Adeyemi – I still have yet to read the first novel in the trilogy but I got it because it was 50% off.
Kindred (Graphic Novel Adaptation) – I enjoyed the novel so much and I really wanted to read the comic adaptation of this story.
Hello, Tokyo by Ebony Bizys – I foudn this at Dollar Tree! I checked it out from the library years ago. It’s got lots of colorful and creative crafts to try.
She Made a Monster: How Mary Shelley Created Frankenstein by Lynn Fulton – I am slowly adding more picture books to my collection. I love the art style and illustrations.
Caught Dead Handed by Carol J. Perry – As I stated earlier, I’m getting more into cozy mysteries so you’ll see quite a few of them in this haul. Love the punny titles.
Death by Dumpling by Vivian Chen – I’ve heard a lot about this series. The food covers look appetizing and the mysteries intrigue me.
The Little Bookshop on the Seine by Rebecca Raisin – I get a montly Harlequin subscription book box and I racked up enough Bonus Bucks to get this book for free.
Woman World by Aminder Dhaliwal – This was a book club pick for March. It was such a fun graphic novel read while also having thought-provoking humor.
The Promise of Change by Debbie Levy and Jo Ann Allen Boyce – I wanted to add more non-fiction to my shelves. This book is about Jo-Ann Allen was one of twelve African-American students who broke the color barrier and integrated Clinton High School in Tennessee.
Ponti! by by Sharlene Teo – A Dollar Tree find. I think this one is a coming-of-age story.
The Wishing World by Todd Fahnestock – This is another Dollar Tree find. It’s a children’s magical fantasy story.
The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta – A YA fantasy novel about a girl named Teodora who can turn people into animals or inanimate objects using her magic.
Then There Was You by Mona Schroff – I always see this author’s books in the store and wanted to try them. This one was gifted to me.
Cutie and The Beast Vol.1 by Yuhi Azumi – An opposites-attract romance that looks pretty cute! I may review this for a future edition of Romance Roundup.
The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani – A bargain find! I heard about this book briefly and was interested. The story follows a Hindu family whose home, once in India, becomes part of Muslim Pakistan when British colonial rule ends and religious violence erupts between once-peaceful neighbors.
Eva Evergreen: Semi-Magical Witch by Julie Abe – Heard it had Kiki’s Delivery Service vibes and it was 50% the cover price. The cover art is gorgeous for this book!
Remembrance by Ria Woods – This novel was gifted to me. I added to my TBR when I first heard about it. It’s historical fiction/ magical realism novel that takes place in two different time periods.
Naondel (The Red Army Chronicles #2) by Maria Turtschaninoff – It’s a fictional story of the First Sisters—the founders of the female utopia the Red Abbey. I haven’t read the first book in the series, but the cover was enticing. Plus it gives me Grave Mercy vibes.
Stand on the Sky by Erin Bow – A Dollar Tree find. It’s about a young Kazakh girl in Mongolia who wants to become an eagle hunter.
Estranged: The Changeling King by Ethan M. Aldridge – I picked up the first volume not too long ago and I found the sequel for a bargain.
Suee and the Shadow by Ginger Ly – I really like middle grade graphic novels and this seems like a fun mystery story!
Ms. Marvel Vol.5 & 6 by G. Willow Wilson – Just adding to my current trade paperback collection. I need to re-read this series from the beginning. I found them on a sale cart at BAM! Lucky me!
Gifted
Twisted Tale Collection (Books 1-3) by Liz Braswell – My friend got me this box set for my birthday! I’m a huge Disney fan so I’m looking forward to reading these books.
Happily Ever Afters by Elise Bryant – Book Twitter and Bookstagram put this book on my radar. I got this a Galetine’s gift from my friend and I ended up sending a book to her as well. It ended up being a surprise book swap!
ARCs/Review Copies
Kisses and Crossaints by Anne-Sophie Jouhanneau – I loved the background of Paris, it’s calm and exciting at the same time. It definitely sparks a wanderlust among readers to travel to the famous city. (Review)
Super Detectives by Cale Atkinson – This is an adorable and fun story of two best friends stuck indoors on a rainy day with nothing to do. Then Simon drums up the idea to play a game of super sleuths matching the look and feel of the famous mystery duo Holmes and Watson. (Review)
The Love and To Loathe by Martha Waters -I love the Regency setting with a bit of modern language that blends with the novel’s romantic comedy narrative. The witty banter and side quips is what makes it so charming. (Review)
TJ Young & The Orishas by Antoine Bandele – I love fantasy stories, so I was excited when the author reached out for review. Isn’t the cover art epic? I hope to have the review up sometime in April.
Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers – If you know my reading tastes I love coming-of-age and self-discovery stories. Honey Girl is one of those. Its a story about falling in love and finding yourself. (Review)
The Far Away Girl by Sharon Maas – The Far Away Girl is a mixture of Literary and Historical Fiction that follows the main character Rita as she grows up and experiences life, loss, change, and a long journey of self-discovery. (Review)
Strictly on Ice by Helen Buckley – I was so excited to hop onto this blog tour because I love ice skating romances. It’s one of my favorite romance sub-genres.
That concludes my January-March book haul! What books did you buy these past months? What books have you recently added to your TBR? Tell me in the comment section below.
Lol at book discount whisperer. Discounts on books is always worth it.
And YEAHIE to getting into picture books!! 😀
My friend always used to call me the book whisperer when we shopped for books together cause I would find good titles to read, lol. I have picture books from my childhood still, but all of the new releases are taking my money. All your picture book hauls are getting me to add more to my shelves.
Enjoyed the post. Kindred adaptation is very good. Remembrance and TJ Young are on my TBR.
Thank you! Hoping to read the Kindred adaptation this summer. The artwork looks amazing.
Wowwwww, this is an amazing haul. I’m excited to hear what you think of the skating romance — I haven’t read very many (any?? maybe one???) skating romance, but it sounds like a perfect subgenre.
I just discovered there is a small sub-genre of ice skating romances and I love it. Some novels have been hit or miss, but I hope more will get published. I did enjoy reading Strictly on Ice!
