My Favorite Things 2019: Movies

Today, I’m talking about my favorite movies that I watched in 2019. I didn’t even get a chance to see half of the movies that were released in the theaters, but I still enjoyed the movies I did. I actually spent most of the year catching up on movies released in prior years and films on my “to watch list”. Here is a compilation of films that made the top of my favorites list.

The sequel was even better than the first film and I love the new adventure our characters go on. While the first movie set up the world of Frozen I appreciated how this movie focused on backstories and the lore of Elsa’s magic. I also loved the songs too! Who doesn’t love 80’s power rock ballads in a Disney film? Every character grows a great deal and the bonds between friends and sisters become even stronger.

I love to watch romantic comedies and since I’m a fan of Ali Wong (her stand up is hilarious!) and Randall Park (from Fresh Off the Boat) I knew I would enjoy this. It was a feel-good movie with the friends-to-lovers trope where the two leads slowly reconnect after being estranged for so long. It was so funny, heartwarming, and it’s about finding your passion in life. And the OST is full of solid 90s tracks which gives the movie a throwback feel.

Based on the based on the Vertigo comic book miniseries of same name this movie has a star-studded cast. Despite all the negative reviews it got, I enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s highly graphic (trigger warnings), but it has a very interesting story line that pulls you in. It’s got some dark humor along with many action-packed scenes. It was so intense! I love good suspenseful action thrillers and this movie delivered.

This movie has been in my Netflix queue forever, and I finally got a chance to watch it this year! It’s thriller period drama where nothing is at is seems. The viewer isn’t really sure which character is telling the truth, so while watching the film you’re constantly trying to piece the puzzle together. The film has some notable actors who do such a great job of playing the characters. The ending threw me for a loop!

The Toy Story films hold a lot of nostalgia for me as I grew up with them. This film like the others is one big emotional roller coaster ride. And as always I was in tears by the end of movie. These films have so much heart, humor, important messages about growing up, friendship, and life in general. It’s a bittersweet ending to a beloved series. I love all of the new characters added to this installment as well as the resurgence of some of my favorite toys.

What a cute rom com! I liked the sweet romance and the plot of fake dating/two opposites attract. I liked how the film flashed bath and forth from the past and present as we learn about Athena and Kenji’s love story. It was heartfelt, funny, and sweet. I liked how the theme of the movie was cherishing your first love. It’s a bit cheesy at times, but it was a solid-feel good film.

This movie is new twist on the Santa Claus origin story and I like that it’s full of humor and heart. I loved the cast of characters and the vivid colors/animation techniques. For an animated film geared toward younger audiences I felt it was also had a lot of adult themes and snarky humor (that was tasteful). It has a lot of messages and metaphors for life as well.
