My Favorite Things 2019: TV

In 2019 I watched A LOT of TV! Even though I’ve had many binge watching sessions throughout the year, I’m still playing catch up with a lot of newer releases as well as older shows. Here’s a list of shows I watched in 2019 that topped my favorites list.

Cells at Work

Synopsis: This is a story about you. A tale about the inside of your body… According to a new study, the human body consists of approximately 37 trillion cells. These cells are hard at work every day within a world that is your body. From the oxygen carrying Red Blood Cells to the bacteria fighting White Blood Cells, Get to know the unsung heroes and the drama that unfolds inside of you!

As the synopsis says, this is an anime about what goes on inside the human body. The show is educational while also being lots of fun! It’s humorous and the “characters” such as the Red and White Blood Cells have a lot of personality. I’ve learned more about the human body in this anime than I felt like I did back in school. I like that it teaches you things while being action-packed and entertaining.

Love Playlist Seasons 1 & 2

Synopsis: Seven university students learn the hard way that romance and relationships aren’t always easy. Being in love is tough, but friends can get through anything together.

This show is one of my favorite web dramas. I love the OST, acting, variety of characters, and the high production value. I think what really makes this show is the chemistry between the actors and their ability to convey each character’s emotions. There are love triangles, friendships that become strained, and unrequited love.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4

Synopsis: Successful and driven, Rebecca Bunch seemingly has it all — an upscale apartment in Manhattan and a partnership at a prestigious law firm — but she feels like something is missing. After a chance meeting with a former romantic interest, Rebecca impulsively decides to give up her life in New York and relocate to West Covina, Calif., a Los Angeles suburb she hopes will be the perfect home base as she embarks on a quest for love, adventure and true happiness.

I’ve enjoyed this show from Season 1, watching the characters transform through each season. I love the creativity behind the production and the unique songs that I continue to sing along too. Which this show is a fun musical, I like that tackles a variety of issues/subjects and breaks down common stereotypes and stigmas. The songs will always stay with me and it’s a show I would watch over and over again.

Welcome to the Ballroom

Synopsis: Third-year middle school student Tatara Fujita is a guy who has no plans for his future or dreams, but tries to find something he can pursue with his whole life. With him being bullied and extorted, he is saved from delinquents by a man named Kaname Sengoku, a motorcycle-riding dance instructor. Tatara is entered into the Ogasawara Dance Studio in which he is shown the ropes of the world of Competitive Ballroom Dancing.

The animation is spectacular and I love the detail put into the dance sequences. But this show is not all about glittery ball gowns and tuxedos, it’s more so focused on the hard-work that these dancers put into their art. The main character, Fujita learns to fall in love with dancing and is determined to show that he’s got what it takes to compete. You’ll be dancing along with this anime for sure!

Creeped Out

Synopsis: A series of spellbinding, enchanting and intriguing tales that will bring chills to the back of the neck. Different characters must navigate their way through the unexplained.

This anthology series is a good anthology show and reminds me of Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark? which I used to watch all of the time. The stories are creepy, eerie, and just the right amount of spooky! It’s good for viewers of all ages and the tales give off that campfire fire story feel.

We Bear Bears

Synopsis: Three brother bears awkwardly attempt to find their place in civilized society, whether they’re looking for food, trying to make human friends, or scheming to become famous on the internet. Grizzly, Panda and Ice Bear stack atop one another when they leave their cave and explore the hipster environs of the San Francisco Bay Area, and it’s clear the siblings have a lot to learn about a technologically driven world.

This show is too cute! I. I love the bears vibrant personalities and how they always stick together. They always get in the craziest situations which make me laugh. It’s very lighthearted while also sharing some important life lessons. I think this one of the best shows I’ve seen on Cartoon Network in the past year.

  1. That Bears show does look like fun: I’ll have to see if I can find a way to watch it! (It looks like the library has a single disc in their catalogue.)

I’m not sure if I could choose favourites for an entire year…but most recently I’ve been enjoying “TopBoy” (UK) and “Sisters” (AUS). The former might not be your cuppa, but I think you’d like “Sisters”. It makes me laugh out loud sometimes. And I am truly invested in the characters (which, given that it’s a pretty short series, impresses me). Later this holiday I’m hoping to watch “His Dark Materials”…I’ve been looking forward to that. Do you have a To Watch list or do you just go by mood?

    1. I have not heard of TopBoy or Sisters before. I do have a to watch list and a long list for my streaming queue. I do pick shows from my list, but the type depends on my mood. Do you?
