My Favorite Things 2020: Movies

Today, I’m talking about my favorite movies that I watched in 2020. You would think that I would have watched more newer releases being at home so much this year. I actually spent most of the year catching up on older movies and re-waiting old favorites that I’ve seen a million times. Here is a compilation of films that made the top of my favorites list.

I liked that Noelle had a modern day Christmas spin and it’s definitely a newer Christmas movie that I can watch over and over again. It reminds you what Christmas is all about; spending time with loved ones and cherishing what you have in life (even the simplest of things). Anna Kendrick as the lead actresses really added to this movie and I thought she was the right actress to pull of the role. A fun twist on Christmas traditions!

I’m a fan of Gong Yoo as an actor (leading role), and I’m so glad the hype about this movie didn’t let me down. I would say that this film goes into my top 10 zombie movies because the story is much more about a outbreak of a virus. It’s more about humanity and the bond between a father and daughter. I thought the pacing was done smoothly even though things move fast. Very action packed and it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

The story for this animated gem is so beautiful and I was blown away by the artwork. The vivid colors and animation style really captured the essence of this film. I am drawn to stories featuring folklore, so I enjoyed how this one explores selkies through the lens of young children. I think that even though this movie is aimed at a younger audience, people of all ages will be mesmerized by it. I would love to check out more films from this studio.

Brittany not only goes through a journey of weight loss, but also a journey of self-love where to she wants to better herself. The audience sees her want to do the marathon to prove to herself that she can do it, not for others. It’s a movie about growth and believing in yourself. It’s a motivating film to watch and it’s full of humor and heart. I love movies about self-discovery and this is a film I would recommend.

This romance film follows the marriage of convenience trope, but I felt it was so much more than that. It had all of the elements of a sweet romance film with it’s tender, quiet moments when the main couple wasn’t bickering at each other. Sanjay and Karina come from two different worlds and they come together for one goal; to move out of their houses and start a independent life on their own. They learn to make it work and from it grow as a couple and independently.

I loved this movie so much. I think casting was key for each of these characters in the main cast and the directors made the right choices. It’s a fish out-of-water tale that is much more mature than I thought it would be (judging by the previews). The troop comes together as a rag tag group of kids that want so desperately to be a part of something bigger and be accepted for who they are. It made me laugh and cry (a little bit). It’s a heartwarming film for sure!

Going into this film, I knew that this would be a such a tear-jerker. It was a great movie from the storytelling aspects to the portrayal of Walt Disney and P.L. Travers by Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson. They along with the supporting cast did such fantastic job! I had no idea all of the drama behind the scenes to make Mary Poppins, on top of Travers sad childhood and why her characters were so important to her. This was a beautiful, touching movie!

  1. Loved Song of the Sea. So emotional and the animation was gorgeous. In 2020, I enjoyed Over the Moon (emotional animated musical) and Birds of Prey (colorful superhero flick).
