My Favorite Things 2020: TV
In 2020 I watched A LOT of TV! Even though I’ve had many binge watching sessions throughout the year, I’m still playing catch up with a lot of newer releases as well as older shows. Here’s a list of shows I watched in 2020 that topped my favorites list.
I finally understand all the hype surrounding My Hero Academia and it’s for a good reason. This is an action-packed anime with lovable heroes and fierce villains. It keeps me on the edge of the seat with its intense battles and I’m always laughing at the dialogue between students. I love the variety of character designs and their special “quirks” (superpowers) that they have. I’m almost finished with Season Two can I can’t wait to watch more of this anime!
It absolutely blew me away from the plot, period costumes, authenticity, rich culture, and spook factor. I’m a big fan of the J-horror genre and this show really tuned into those aspects. While there were some jump scare moments a lot of the horror was subtle and really built up at the last couple of episodes. It’s a carefully crafted show and the suspense really pulls the reader into the narrative. I hope there will be a Season Three!
This is a pretty interesting show that was recommend to me by one of my good friends. It reminds me a little of the format of The Daily Show and Adam Ruins Everything. I like that each episode goes into depth about a particular subject (ex. fast fashion, climate change, student loans) and is presented in way that is easy to digest. Though Hassan’s show is infused with comedy, he definitely gets the point across to his audience.
I’ve read the manga for this series, but this is the first time I have watched the anime all the way through. It does capture the essence of the manga. It really is a romantic comedy in every way (with a small bit of angst thrown in). It’s laugh out loud funny, the characters get into crazy situations, and the banter between Risa and Koizumi is highly entertaining. I love the cast of characters in this series and it’s a fun watch.
I really enjoy medical dramas and this show has been on my watch list for a long time. It had a lot of buzz during it’s run on TV and even today. It’s a mashup of some of my favorite medical dramas, but has a wisecracking nurse as it’s lead character. Her character is conflicting since she does so many good deeds, but also hiding so many secrets. I’m looking forward how the characters will be explored/narratives intertwine in the latter seasons.
I’m not the best cook, but I love cooking shows! I love this show and all of it’s delicious recipes. Forewarning, do not watch this show when you are hungry! I like the variety of recipes showcased and that they seem easy to make. Nadiya’s recipes are more focused on spending less time and the kitchen and that’s what makes her recipes so appealing to me. I can’t wait to try making one of her creations.
I was particularly excited to watch this anime because one of the main characters of the series is Black. I’m still working my way through the series, but I love how light-hearted and motivational it can be at times. Carole and Tuesday face a lot of hardships during entering the music world. They face a lot of obstacles, but have a positive attitude to handle it all. Plus the music is so good! I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of music showcased.
This a drama that I had on my watch list for a while. This is funny show with romance and family drama . It’s got a lot of laugh-out-loud parts and some tender moments as well as Akiko gets to know her fake fiancé’s family. It’s also drama about self-discovery. I really appreciated that the romantic aspect of it slow-moving. They focus on the character development more rather than rushing into the romance.
I love to watch bookish anime about books. After watching a wholesome anime recommendation video on the Youtube channel Get In The Robot, I decided to watch this show. I like that it’s heartwarming, humorous, and showcases the heart of a bibliophile. Honda-san is a delightful character and I like that he never mocks his customers for their sometimes unusual requests. I also like that it takes a deeper look at the world of publishing.
Wotakoi is a amine that is cute, lighthearted, and full of nerdiness. I always find myself laughing at each episode and I like it’s relatability. It’s cute to see two longtime friends who decided to become a couple and to see them adapt to being a couple. Anyone is apart of a fandom, a gamer, or a nerd in general will enjoy this show and how it tackles being a geek in the workplace.
And that concludes the list My Favorite TV Shows of 2020! What are some of your favorite TV shows that you loved in 2020? Comment below!
I really enjoyed Nurse Jackie and really enjoyed her co-workers more than anything! The series did not go in the direction that I was expecting but I really cared about what happened to all of them and STILL sometimes think about those characters (especially when hospitals IRL and their staff are on our own minds even more than usual these days).
Now I’m enjoying the last season of Shameless, which has all the familiar characters dealing with COVID, just like we are, and even more street scenes on Chicago’s southside than I remember from earlier seasons.
Ohh that sounds interesting about Nurse Jackie. I took a break after Season One so I’m going to start Season Two soon. The co-workers is one of the reasons I really got into the show. It’s different from a lot of the other medical dramas that I’ve watched. I still haven’t watched Shameless. I need to soon!
In 2020 I enjoyed Hilda and Skip Beat. I re-watched Naruto, Inuyasha, and Hunter x Hunter.
I remember watching Skip Beat a while back. I wish they added more seasons since the manga is so long. And Naruto and Inuyasha give me so much nostalgia. I have Hunter x Hunter on my list for 2021 to watch.
