My Favorite Things 2024: Movies
Today, I’m talking about my favorite movies that I watched in 2024. You would think that I would have watched even more newer releases this year, but I usually spend most of the year catching up on older movies and re-waiting old favorites that I’ve seen a million times. I managed to watch a decent amount of 2024 releases this year. Here are some of the films that made the top of my favorites list.
Beetlejuice
Three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River after an unexpected family tragedy. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life soon gets turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter discovers a mysterious portal to the afterlife. When someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, the mischievous demon gleefully returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.
Now this is how you do a reboot/sequel of a beloved film! Burton and the cast were able to capture the original spirit of the film as well as bring in some unique elements. I loved this film so much and I felt it was on par with the original movie. As always Burton brings whimsical and creepy elements together very well. The humor was done well and it was overall very entertaining. I can’t wait to rewatch this movie again!
Lisa Frankenstein
A misunderstood teenager and a reanimated Victorian corpse embark on a murderous journey together to find love, happiness, and a few missing body parts.
If you like Tim Burton films, The Heathers, and dark comedies then this film is a must-watch. This is a good fun horror film with some gore but with the fun contrast of the neon colors of the 1980’s. The acting performances are over the top giving the film its quirkiness and eccentricity. I enjoyed it and think it has the potential to be a cult classic. This film is the feature-length debut of director Zelda Williams, daughter of the late great Robin Williams and she did a really good job making this horror romance comedy story that viewers will enjoy.
Wicked
Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a student with an unflinching desire for popularity. Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, their relationship soon reaches a crossroad as their lives begin to take very different paths.
Wicked is one of most favorite musicals ever! I felt the film could have been adapted into one piece instead of two parts, but how the plot was done was setup well. Even though the film has a long run time, I was never bored at all. I was in constant awe of the sets, attention to detail, musical numbers, and most of all Enrivo’s and Grande’s performances as Elphaba and Glinda. I was enamored from the beginning to the end of the film, and like many other viewers, the movie had me in tears from the emotional performances. I can’t wait to watch this movie again.
Woman of the Hour
In 1970s Los Angeles, as a wave of murders makes headlines, a young woman aspiring to become an actress and a serial killer cross paths during an episode of a dating show.
This film is based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala and his 1978 appearance on the television show The Dating Game in the midst of his murder spree. There are some fictional bits mixed into the film, but most of it follows the original story. It’s a bone-chilling story that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Kendrick’s does a great job of directing and playing the main character (it’s also the first time I’ve watched her in a film like this. The movie has a strong social commentary on the treatment of women in the entertainment industry and how it explores misogyny in a patriarchal setting. It’s a film I would highly recommend.
