My Favorite Things 2024: Music

As 2024 comes to a close. I’ll be sharing my favorites of the year and chatting about my top picks. Today I’ll be sharing my top picks in music. Narrowing down music into compilation posts is always a daunting task for me since I listen to a wide variety of music daily. I listen to way more Spotify and music playlists on YouTube, etc. I’ve been listening to a lot of Lo-fi or indie music playlists especially since it helps me as I work or study.

Here’s a list of some of my 2024 favorites in music:

Spotify Stats

As a lot of people have discussed online, Spotify Wrapped was very lackluster as far as tracking genres and the categories that they usually have not being there. But i still am interested to see what are the songs/artists I am listening to the most.

I was so shocked to see Magnetic as my top song of the year, but here we are. This and Lucky Girl Syndrome are the only songs I like from this group so far. I won’t deny though that this song is so addictive and catchy (along fun to sing along with).

And since I use Spotify usually to stream K-Pop (most other genres I listen to on music devices or Youtube) I’m not shocked to see my songs and artists of the year. Since VIVIZ is a group with former members of GFriend and I’m a long time fan, I’m happy to see them as my artist of the year. Plus I got to see them live in concert too! Aespa at first has not been on my radar, but their new releases have me hooked. I also listened to a ton of Epik High as I went to their concert as a newbie listener and now am a fan of the group.

Breakout/New to Me Artists

  • Chanmina
  • Epik High
  • Young Posse
  • Fuji Kaze
  • RAYE
  • Amaarae
  • Avery Sunshine
  • Natalia Lafourcade
  • Brittney Spencer
  • Karol G
  • Kiss of Life

Songs

There’s no way I could list all of my favorite songs I listened to, but here is a sampling of songs (new and old) that I had on replay constantly all year long.

Albums

XXL by Young Posse – YOUNG POSSE’s group name stands for “a group of young people gathered with a purpose” and this theme carries over into their second EP. XXL is my favorite track from the group and I love the callback/homage to 90s Hip-Hop. As a rookie group I saw in concert these girls give a powerful performance and I look forward to see them group as they grow. The bring a lot of fun and quirkiness to K-Pop that has been missing over the last few years.

Wicked OST – Spoiler alert! This is one of my favorite films of 2024! Wicked is one of my favorite musicals (even though I have yet to see the stage show). I know the songs by heart and this OST especially Cynthia Erivo’s vocals gave me goosebumps! I love the music so much!

Cowboy Carter by Beyoncé – Don’t know if I’ve ever talked about this on the blog, but I love Country music so this album was up my alley. The album goes beyond Southern and Western culture through the lyrics and touches on many topics. I really enjoyed how the cover of Blackbird was arranged and all of the unique musical arrangements/collaborations. It’s such a cohesive album and it’s one of my top favorite Beyoncé albums overall.

Pump by Epik High -As I mentioned earlier I saw Epik High in concert which meant hearing the songs live added an extra level to their music. This mixtape is a mixture of new and old Hip-Hop sounds and messages of getting excited (“pumped”) but also reflections on their time in the industry. It’s got a lot of genres mixed in too which gives their songs an extra flavor.

All Access by FLO – Finally their debut album is here and it did not disappoint!!! There is such a lack of girl groups in the West especially Black girl groups and FLO delivers on these songs. With strong melodic ballads to upbeat R&B songs there is a good amount of variety while also being cohesive with its theming. Their harmonies are so solid and vocals are stunning. I can’t wait to see them live in concert next year.

What were your music favorites in 2024? Are there any albums, genres, or songs that you constantly had on repeat? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. This year I was more into music-playing than specific music, if you know what I mean. I chose a lot of community-created lists, almost randomly, and the habit kept me company (while doing certain kinds of work, household chores, all that). Initially I thought I’d discover new favourites that way, but I didn’t. I do love the summaries various apps display though. When you’re looking at yours, do you ever look at the date and think “Well, of course I listened to more music on May 4th than any other day of the year?” Whatever date was your “most listening” date?

    1. I think for the past year I realized my playlists needed a refresh and I wanted to get out of my music comfort zone. I pushed myself to balance old favorites and discovering new music in order to find some new artists.
