My Favorite Things: August
My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!
TV
That’s So Raven
Synopsis: No ordinary teenager; Raven Baxter can see glimpses of the future! Watch her schemes and misadventures as she enlists the help of friends, including best friends Eddie and Chelsea, to change life’s little outcomes. Raven’s younger brother, Cory, is obsessed with money and creates get-rich-quick schemes to try to earn cash.
I signed up for Disney Plus this summer and have been working my way through the catalog of Disney shows and original movies. I’m discovering a lot of old favorites and even movies I forgot about. That’s So Raven was a must watch as a kid and even today it’s still laugh out loud funny to me. I always look forward to what new and crazy adventures that Raven and her friends will get into.
Merman in My Tub
Synopsis: A hot boy mermaid named Wakasa has taken over the bath of a teenage boy named Tatsumi! This cute but selfish freeloader is a perfect match for the cool but tender and caring Tatsumi. Let’s see how they get by together!
A completely random anime find based off the manga series of the same name. Like the title states, the show follows a high-schooler and the merman who ends up living in his tub (while being a complete freeloader). It’s completely wacky, and very random. All 13 episodes end up being a one hour watch in total, so it’s a very binge-able anime with interesting characters and lots of comedy.
Movies
Ghost Sweepers
Synopsis: This comedy horror film is about a group of shamans from across the nation who gather together for a grand exorcism at a small village notorious for dark spirits, as a young journalist gets sent to cover the story.
This is a South Korean comedy horror film. Though it has some spooky bits in it, the film focuses more on the comedy aspect and even the supposed “scary” parts are pretty funny in itself. Though it was a bit predictable in some parts, the joy of this film is the cast and how they portray these very entertaining characters. There’s random comedic banter in action scenes and over the top physical comedy which makes for an entertaining viewing experience.
The Incredible Jessica James
Synopsis: Jessica, an aspiring playwright in New York City, is trying to get over a recent break-up when she meets Boone, who’s also recovering from a recent split. Together, they figure out a way to make it in a “post-relationship” world.
This is a movie that follows a woman trying to live her dreams of being a well-renowned playwright and struggling in her career. It’s relatable since it has themes of growing up, finding your passion, and trying to grow in your career. The only problem I had with this movie is that it felt a bit disjointed at times. I think it would have been better as a mini-series so it could expand on some of the plot lines introduced during the film. But it was comforting to watch and I enjoyed the story.
Podcast
You Must Remember This
Synopsis: This podcast is dedicated to exploring the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood’s first century.
I am always fascinated and eager to learn more about history, so I wanted to check out this show recommended by Dueling Disney (another podcast I enjoy). Each season is a complete deep dive into a different part of Hollywood history and I liked all the research and care put into each episode. I find myself learning something new with each episode.
Music
When We Disco by J.Y. Park & Sunmi
I do love me some disco music and I was excited when JYP was coming out with yet another retro themed comeback. The melody is very 80s-esque, it’s groovy, and you can’t help to dance along with the track (since the choreography is easy to follow).
Movin’ by Gregory Porter
I also enjoy Porter’s soulful vocals and it has a very soothing effect on me. His emotions carry across each track and you can feel the emotions of each song. It’s a jazzy mid-tempo track that I listen to on repeat.
Love Again by Brandy x Daniel Cesear
This is a beautiful song and I can’t stop listening to it. Enough said.
Youtube
Tima Loves Lemons
Recently, I’ve gotten back into the beauty side of Youtube videos. One of my newer (to me) favorite channels that I enjoy is Tima’s. I love the soothing and beautiful aesthetics of her looks she creates. Her videos has given me some new ideas on makeup looks to try.
Psychology in Seattle
I’ve often talked about reality shows on my blog, and I love how Psychology in Seattle takes a deeper dive into shows like 90 Day Fiance, but through the lens of a couple’s therapist. It’s given me some new ways of thinking when I digest some of these types of shows.

I love Gregory Porter’s music! And your new header!
In August, I finally got around to watching the second season of “Atlanta” and I’m almost caught up with the U.S. version of Shameless, which is sometimes pretty silly after ten seasons, but I love the mix of comedy and drama (and they’ve written in the current political unrest with new plotlines to reflect some of the injustices perpetrated by the current administration, so that’s fun to watch too).
A favourite read for August was Ling Ma’s Severance. That’s one that I borrowed from the library last year but then a friend recommended it to me again with the lockdown this spring, raving so much that I had to buy it, and this time I could hardly put it down!
Thank you!
I’ve been meaning to watch Atlanta for the long time, it’s on my watch list. I also have Shameless on my list too. I’ll have to watch them soon. Happy reading and viewing in September.
