My Favorite Things: August

My Favorite Things is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. I hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Wedding Season

Pressured by their parents to find spouses, Asha and Ravi pretend to date during a summer of weddings, only to find themselves falling for each other.

This was a delightfully comedic and entertaining romantic comedy from beginning to end. The movie has themes of family, culture, and identity. The two leads have great chemistry with each other, and I loved their constant banter as they play up a façade of being a fake couple. They have abundant chemistry that plays out very naturally even though the film is full of rom-com tropes.

TV

Zombieverse

In this part reality, part variety show participants must outwit the undead during a zombie outbreak in Seoul, South Korea.

The goal of the ten contestants is they must work together to secure necessities and survive the zombie onslaught with the goal of reaching an evacuation ship on Wolmi Island. If they get bitten, they turn into a zombie and exit the game. It’s fun and competitive, but you have to suspense some disbelief to really enjoy it. The makeup and acting are scarily real which adds to the immersive elements of the show.

Ghosts

Samantha, a cheerful freelance journalist, and Jay, an up-and-coming chef from the city, throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge run-down country estate they inherited into a bed and breakfast — only to find it’s inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents.

I’ve been meaning to watch this show since it first came out, but I just haven’t gotten the chance to watch it until now. It’s a cozy, comedic, and heartwarming show with strong writing and an excellent cast that keeps you entertained. The episodic nature of each episode’s plot makes for easy, softly spooky viewing during Halloween and all year long. I highly recommend it!

YouTube

What Happened To Lisa Frank

Lisa Frank was a status symbol in elementary school in the 80s and 90s and this video gives a nice overview of the company’s history. It filled with nostalgia as I’m a long-time fan of the products and it’s interesting to see how the brand has made a comeback today. However, like some companies, Lisa Frank has a tumultuous history.

Nowhere to Go: The Loss of Third Places

This video is a commentary on how there is a lot of pushback towards young people’s usage of social media, but no one is talking about how much lonelier they are becoming due to urbanization. I can see this shift in my own neighborhood as in my teenage years there were many “third places” for me and my friends to hang out even when still had access to social media.

Decorate With Me – Halloween Tiered Trays

I love decorating for the spooky season and in my home, I have 80% of my Halloween décor up already. Angie has some great videos of her own Halloween décor and I’ve taken some inspiration from her setups. I love the idea of a Halloween-tiered tray. I would love to try it in my own home!

Music

Angel by Halle

This song is absolutely mesmerizing with the combination of Halle’s powerful vocal performance with ghostly harps. It’s hauntingly beautiful and I love the message of the song which is an anthem to affirm women and a note to self that her work matters, and holds value.

Read My Lips by Jessie Ware

I love the retro sound and vibe of this song so much and what stands out to me is the bassline in this song. It’s got a bubblegum sound mixed with a funky groove making it a great song to dance along to.

Love & Pain by Lyre

LYRE is a music production and songwriting company, and you may know them from writing songs for popular K-Pop acts along with artists such as Fall Out Boy and Betty Who. This is a great original track from the duo and this ballad has a bit of R&B sound which draws me into the music.
