My Favorite Things: February

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Encanto

The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift — every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger.

A movie where I’ve had the soundtrack on repeat for weeks! I loved the story of the magical Madrigals and the powers that they use to help their community. The animation is so colorful reflecting not only the characters and landscape but the rich culture of Columbia. This is a movie with a lot of heart and I appreciated how it tackles generational family trauma and holding yourself up to a standard that is unattainable. There are so many meaningful and important discussions in this movie that will connect with many viewers.

TV

All Of Us Are Dead

After a failed science experiment, a local high school is overrun with zombies, and the trapped students struggle to survive. With no food or water, and communication cut-off by the government, they must use equipment around the school to protect themselves in the midst of a battleground or they will become part of the infected.

I love to watch zombie films/TV shows so I was very intrigued by the trailer for this webtoon adaptation on Netflix. From the cinematography to the plot this show does not disappoint at all. It’s action-packed and fast-moving while also keeping the focus balanced between the character relationships and the impending danger of the situation. While the show is mainly focused on trying to navigate through a zombie apocalypse, we also see the enemies that form within the survival groups. Underneath the surface, the show comments on politics, bullying, money, social classes, and more. My favorite part was the characters as this show has some particularly well-written villains and overall great character development. Here’s hoping that there will be a Season Two!

Marriage, Not Dating

Wealthy plastic surgeon Gong Ki Tae is a successful and happy bachelor who does not want to find himself a wife. He believes that his life is perfectly planned, and being single is the only option he accepts. However, his family is badgering him to marry. In an effort to get his parents off his back about the constant string of blind dates and marriage prospects, Ki Tae purposely brings Joo Jang Mi home to meet his parents posing as his girlfriend, certain that they’ll never approve of her.

I’m about 70% finished watching this show at the moment and I’m enjoying it a lot. The rom-com show follows a marriage contract trope where two (somewhat) strangers decided to go through a fake dating/marriage scheme only to find the deeper they get into a relationship the more it complicates things. Enter in some second-lead syndrome, rotating love triangles, and exes that just can’t let go of the past for some good drama. At times the characters can be a little frustrating, but overall this show is still swoon-worthy and very comedic. It’s a bit over-the-top and the silliness of it is what keeps drawing me to each new episode.

YouTube

A Goofy Movie: A Staple of Black Culture

A Goofy Movie is one of my favorite movies, and one day this YouTube video caught my eye. The video goes into why black millennials relate to the movie so much that they both declare that A Goofy Movie is Black culture. I also like how the video touched on the production factors behind the movie and why it has such a long-lasting effect on viewers (and became a cult classic).

That Girl: Wellness Shouldn’t Be Work

I think I’ve shared The Take’s videos on the blog before, but I enjoyed this one a lot recently. It talks about the self-care/wellness trend on YouTube and all over social media. The video discusses how the trend which is supposed to be helpful and full of life hacks but ends up seeming like so much work and puts more pressure on people.

Music

Run2U by StayC

Being that I’ve been a K-Pop fan since 2009, this song is taking me back to the 2nd generation (K-Pop) songs I loved and are iconic. StayC has consistently come back with unique tracks with each comeback and this song is so fun! I can’t wait to see what else this rookie group will come up with.

Ivy by Mabel

I love to discover new music all of the time and this ballad track struck me on a music playlist I found on YouTube. I love the soulful vocals and ow the melody is a mix of Pop and R&B music. It reminds me of some tracks I listened to several years ago.

Roses

One of my top favorite Outkast songs to date. This came up in a 2000s hits radio channel I listen to constantly. I never get tired of this song at all. That iconic piano riff at the beginning, the jazzy melody, and the catchiness of it all. A classic song!

  1. This reminds me that I need to finish watching All of Us Are Dead. I liked it too cause I’m a sucker for any zombie show.
And I saw a meme on that about the Goofy movie going around but I didn’t know there was an entire vid on it. Love that movie.

    1. I’m glad you’re enjoying it. You have to let me know what you think of Season One after you finish the finale. And the Goofy movie meme has been strong. But I liked how that video explained why Black millennials really relate to the movie.

  2. I feel like Disney movies need to come with teardrop ratings instead of stars. I’m afraid to watch them now, even this one, which everyone seems to love! Heh

All of Us Are Dead looked interesting, so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it. I’ve been watching I May Destroy You and the new season of Dexter. They fit together better than you might think. LOL

    1. It is good. I did not cry while watching Encanto, but I teared up multiple times. Pixar knows just the right way to reach your emotions in its animated features. I May Destroy You Is on my list since I’m a fan of Michaela Coel.

  3. We’ve been watching Zen Motoring, I wonder if you can get that. He was on YouTube before he had a TV series … just weird and amazing. Other than that I just seem to have been working or running – oops! More balance needed!

    1. I might be able to find that show streaming online perhaps? I feel the same though. February was busy and not the best work-life balance for me.
