My Favorite Things: January

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

TV

No Good Nick

Synopsis: No Good Nick centers on 13-year-old Nicole Franzelli. She presents herself at the door of the Thompson family and declares she is an orphan named Nicole Patterson and that they are her closest living relatives, successfully infiltrating her target. As she gets to know the family, however, she finds compassion for them and will struggle with whether or not she can go through with her plan.” Later, it is revealed that she is being manipulated by her imprisoned father to right some wrong inflicted on his family by the Thompsons.

This is a drama show that is heartfelt and comedic while tackling some heavier subjects such as incarceration and foster care system. Though it was very cheesy at times (the canned laughter got on my nerves), the story and characters grew on me. It’s a revenge story that turns into a larger narrative. Though it did get cancelled, at least it ended without having a bad cliffhanger.

Resident: Story of 5 Interns

Synopsis: Shizuku Miyama heard her father, who is a doctor, say that he doesn’t have any expectations from his daughter because she is a girl. Since that time, Shizuku Miyama has strived to become a doctor to get recognition from her dad. She is now a medical resident and goes through training with four others. The 5 residents are all assigned to work at an emergency center for the next 3 months.

I love medical dramas so I was very intrigued by this show. The show revolves around 5 intern from different areas of medicines as the work in the ER. Each of them have different personalities that tend to clash at times. Each character is dealing with their internal struggles on the job in in their personal lives. So far I like the medical aspects of the show and the strong character development.

Family Matters

Synopsis: Policeman Carl Winslow has enough to deal with on the job. But when he gets home, he still has to handle kids, his wife, Harriette (whose character was first introduced on the sitcom “Perfect Strangers”), his mom, a sister-in-law and Urkel, the nerd next door who doesn’t understand that he doesn’t actually live with the Winslows.

Family Matters was the show that I always had on the TV growing up! I’ve been feeling nostalgic and re-watching a lot of the episodes lately. I love the topics the show handles, messages about life/growing up, the family aspect, and most of all the comedy. These characters are golden and this will continue to be one of my favorite shows.

Broken: Season One

Synopsis: This investigative docuseries shows how negligence and deceit in the production and marketing of popular consumer items can result in dire outcomes.

Docu-series are something I’m always looking for so my interest was piqued when I found this show. The first season focuses on mass consumer products such as cosmetics, furniture, etc and the dangers that lie within each industry. It was a thought-provoking series in which I learned a lot of new things that I wasn’t aware. It’s also helped me to be more conscientious of what I buy.

Movies

Love Per Square Foot

Synopsis: Individually, Sanjay and Karina don’t earn enough to be able to buy a home, so they enter into a marriage of convenience.

This romance film follows the marriage of convenience trope, but I felt it was so much more than that. Sanjay and Karina come from two different worlds and they come together for one goal; to move out of their houses and start a independent life on their own. They come from different backgrounds too, but they make it work. It was fun, vibrant, a great cast, and the romance was sweet!

So I Married an Anti Fan

Synopsis: An entertainment reporter hates a star after she is fired for trying to reveal secrets about him. After a series of events, she starts to fall in love with the entertainer.

I’m a big EXO fan so I was intrigued to watch it since many K-pop fans are always gushing about it. I knew what to expect from the very beginning, but was still very entertained by the movie. It was so cute and funny, while also showcasing the antics of a fandom. Chanyeol is adorable in this movie and I want to check out more of his acting roles.

Troop Zero

Synopsis: In rural 1977 Georgia, a misfit girl dreams of life in outer space. When a competition offers her a chance to be recorded on NASA’s Golden Record, she recruits a makeshift troop of Birdie Scouts, forging friendships that last a lifetime.

I loved this movie so much. I think casting was key for each of these characters in the main cast and the directors made the right choices. It’s a fish out-of-water tale that is much more mature than I thought it would be (judging by the previews). The troop come together as a rag tag group of kids that want so desperately to be a part of something and be accepted for who they are. It made me laugh and cry (a little bit). I recommend this movie!

Beauty

Latte Art Cappucino Cream in Scrub

This scrub by Tony Moly is one of the very few scrubs that gentle on my skin and not too harsh. After using it, it leaves my skin completely smooth. Plus it smells like a latte! If you’re looking gentle face scrub, this is it!

Music

Any Song by ZICO

I’ve been a fan of Zico’s work since his early days as a Block B member. His solo work is fantastic! Any Song is such a catchy song that is very relatable to many as it talks about going through your days as a routine and wanting something more out of life.

Dreaming Fool by JGrrey

I love Majectic Sessions on Yotube since it introduces me to new artists. I love JGrrey’s vocals. They are soft, but melodic. This song is a perfect mid-tempo chill track. I’ll have to check out more of her work!

うれしい!たのしい!大好き!by Love Harmony’s Inc

LHI is a acapella vocal group from Japan that is incredibly talented! I love their unique vocal arrangement for each song ahd wide range that they have. Each of theri voices is distinctive, but they harmonize beautifully!
