My Favorite Things: June
My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!
TV
Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous
Synopsis: Teens attending an adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar must band together to survive when dinosaurs wreak havoc on the island.
I’m a huge fan of the Jurassic Park films and have been eyeing this series ever since it was released. After my friend’s suggestion, I decided to watch it and found that I really enjoyed this show. I’m still finishing up Season 3, but I would recommend this show to fans of the franchise. It’s a well-written series set in the Jurassic Park universe featuring teens from all walks of life. The show is thrilling and action-packed while also allowing itself to have quieter moments to show character growth. It’s a show for all ages, but I’m glad that it actually keeps the beauty of the park but also has the underlying danger of being trapped on a dino island. Some moments are pretty terrifying!
Shanai Marriage Honey
Synopsis: A young couple got married almost immediately after meeting each other through a dating app and did not realize that they were working for the same company. They decided to keep their marriage a secret from their company and friends. At first, both parties thought it’s okay to get married without love but they gradually got attracted to each other.
Usually, most of the romantic-comedy J-Dramas that I watch tend to be a bit tame, but I was shocked by this one as it’s definitely more on the steamy side of things. The drama is short at 7 episodes and only 24 minutes per episode. It moves very fast and I wished there were at least two episodes to smooth out the character development. But for what the drama was it enjoyable, funny, and sweet. The couple was charming and their awkward moments were cute.
Dangerless Detectives
Synopsis: Two young detectives are looking forward to the future. Takano Shin is looking forward to being promoted and spends his time studying for promotions and utilizing in-house politics. Yonaka Wataru is busy with job hunting. Though they confront the numerous crimes in the city, they don’t work overtime, push themselves or even investigate.
If you enjoy slapstick comedies this is a J-drama I highly recommend it! It’s light-hearted, fun, and completely wacky. The series does not take itself too seriously at all which I think is the appeal of it. Takano and Yonaka are detectives that literally want to do the bare minimum of work and it was hilarious how they wanted to spend their days drinking iced coffee, but end up actually having to be roped into a current case with each episode. It’s formulaic, but a good show to watch after a stressful day at work.
Podcasts
Mangasplaining
Synopsis: Curious about manga but don’t know where to start? Well neither does comics writer/artist Chip Zdarsky! Join manga experts Deb Aoki, David Brothers, and Christopher Butcher, as they introduce the medium to Chip (and to you!) through some of its best and most important works. Every week a new volume of manga to re-discover, discuss, and enjoy!
I’m so glad I found this podcast through Twitter! It has such delightful hosts and I love the variety of manga covered in their show. I think the discussions of each volume of manga are entertaining and gives a new take on manga that I’ve previously read in the past. I’ve each found some new series I want to try from listening to the podcast. Most of the episodes (the ones I’ve listened to) aren’t very spoiler-heavy which is really nice.
Youtube
Joe Jenkins
Joe is an English pianist and YouTuber. He initially started his channel with his piano covers on random songs. I found his channel a few months back. I used to play piano so I really enjoy his videos a lot. Plus he plays a nice variety of tunes and it’s funny to watch the expressions of bystanders recognize their favorite songs.
Tomi’s World
On Tomi’s channel takes viewers from her travels and experience in Japan as a Jamaican JET Program participant. I love her vibrant energy in her storytimes and watching her adventures to different travel spots. Her videos will put a smile on your face and her content is interesting.
Theme Park Express
I love going to theme parks and Theme Park has become one of my new favorite channels that I liked to watch. He covers news, reviews, and vlogs in theme parks (mainly in Florida). I like his honest opinions on everything from theme park food to experiences within each park. He’s got a lot of good content that is good for planning a trip.
Music
Coin by IU
IU always brings it with every comeback and I love the funky sound and feel of this track. It gives me an overall 80s funk vibe and it’s also a good dance track. I like how fitting the cinematography is in this MV to go with the theme of the song.
Rockabye by Lost Girl ft. BackRoad Gee
I discovered this song from Instagram and it’s become a Summer bop for me. It’s a song that has me instantly dancing along to the beat. Like the music video shows, it also makes a good roller skating track! This song has all the Summer vibes!
