My Favorite Things: June Edition

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

TV

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – Season 4

Synopsis: Rescued after 15 years in a cult, Kimmy Schmidt decides to reclaim her life by venturing to New York, where she experiences everyday life with wide-eyed enthusiasm. On a whim, she rents a room from Titus, a wannabe Broadway actor, who makes ends meet as a street performer in Times Square. The unlikely pair find they’re well-suited to help each other out, with Titus reintroducing Kimmy to modern life, and her providing him with the inspiration that you should never give up. Together they’ll make it through whatever life throws at them.

I’m working my way through my never ending Netflix queue and decided to finish up Unbreakable. So far, it’s good. There has only been one episode that could have been cut because I felt like it wasn’t needed, but other than that I have no complaints. I like how much Kimmy and the other main characters have grown over the series and seeing them overcome obstacles. Kimmy has been through a lot, but continues to persevere time and time again. Her optimism is also very contagious and you can’t help but laugh along with her on her journey.

United Shades of America

Synopsis: American documentary television series starring comedian W. Kamau Bell. Bell visits communities across America to understand the challenges they face.

A co-worker recommended this show to me and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve seen and enjoyed Bell’s stand-up comedy and hope to read his book soon. Bell tackles tough issues throughout America and giving spotlight to how the community is trying to improve upon it while bringing awareness to the issues. I’ve become more aware of things I didn’t know much about through this show and I like that even though the episodes can be heavy Bell infuses slight humor into his investigation of issues helping to make it somewhat easier to digest for its viewers.

Movies

Men In Black: International

Synopsis: The Men in Black have expanded to cover the globe but so have the villains of the universe. To keep everyone safe, decorated Agent H and determined rookie M join forces — an unlikely pairing that just might work. When aliens that can take the form of any human arrive on Earth, H and M embark on a globe-trotting adventure to save the agency — and ultimately the world — from their mischievous plans.

I was a bit worried about a reboot of this movie series since it was a childhood favorite, but I was not disappointed. Taking the movie in a international direction allowed for the world building expansion and making the MIB more interesting. Seeing the two leads travel to different destinations while on the mission to save the agency made it very entertaining. On top of that, it was action-packed so there were very few dull moments. If they were to make another MIB International movie, I would go see it.

Ratatouille

Synopsis: Remy dreams of becoming a great chef, despite being a rat in a definitely rodent-phobic profession. He moves to Paris to follow his dream, and with the help of hapless garbage boy Linguini he puts his culinary skills to the test in the kitchen but he has to stay in hiding at the same time, with hilarious consequences. Remy eventually gets the chance to prove his culinary abilities to a great food critic but is the food good?

Ratatouille was the cutest movie! I’ve been on a quest this summer to catch up on movies on my to-watch list and chose this Pixar favorite. It was entertaining from beginning to end watching Remy concoct all these delicious recipes. This movie made me want to cook up a storm and also visit Paris from the beautiful scenic shots in the film. It’s very heartfelt, made me laugh out loud, and reminds its viewers to never give up on their dreams.

Music

ZGZG by Saay

Saay is a former member of K-pop girl group Evol which had the edgiest look and vibe. This song has a fun sound and is a high energy track. The MV reflects the song perfectly and the choreography is on point! I’ll have to check out more from from this artist in the future.

Thinkin Bout You by Katie

This song has the most chill sound and it reminds me a lo-fi study track. Katie was one of my favorite contestants off the latter season of K-Pop Star and I like how unique her vocals are. I love the R&B style of this song, and the whole album is equally great.

Done for Me by Charlie Puth feat. Kehlani

This is such a good collaboration track between Kehlani and Charlie. While their vocals stand out in each of their solo parts, the harmonizing parts the best. Their vocals along with the funky, smooth vibe makes it such a solid dance track.

Podcasts

Book Riot: All The Books!

Synopsis: All the Books is a weekly book podcast of recommendations and discussions about the most interesting and exciting new book releases.

I’ve been listening to Book Riot’s main podcast for a while and decided to check out their All the Books! podcast. Hosts, Liberty and Rebecca, make this podcast so much fun to listen to with their lively personalities. I love discovering new books I haven’t heard about about. This podcast is sure to fill up your TBR with new reads!

The Something Scary Podcast

Synopsis: Do you wanna hear something scary? Join Sapphire every week as she brings you the creepiest ghost stories, urban legends, and folktales.

I’ve been following the Something Scary videos on their Youtube channel for a while and found the podcast version recently. If you like spooky stories about things that go “bump in the night”, then you’ll enjoy this podcast. The host, Sapphire, is such an excellent narrator immersing the listener in each bone-chilling tale.

Beauty

Acure Soothing Cleansing Cream

I received this among all the skincare products I got for my birthday and I love it so much! It’s the perfect cleanser for summertime as it’s light and cleans your skin so well. It’s very soothing and I recommend if you have somewhat sensitive skin like me.

  1. I think W. Kamau Bell has a podcast too, but maybe it’s no longer in production? I’ve got a terrible habit of adding new ones to my list for listening but, then, I end up distracted by trying to “catch up” (whatever that means) with the ones I’m already following, so I don’t always get to other ones for awhile. For instance, I subbed to both of the humourous ones you’ve mentioned recently, but I still haven’t gotten to them yet! It’s a nice “problem” to have.

    1. Don’t feel too bad, I have a lot of podcasts in my listening queue, but some I have yet to get to. I feel like I’m playing a constant game up catch up too. I’ll look and see if Bell’s podcast is still in production. Thanks for the recommendation!
