My Favorite Things: March

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Saving Mr. Banks

Synopsis: Spurred on by a promise he made to his daughters, Walt Disney embarks on what would become a 20-year quest to obtain the movie rights to “Mary Poppins.” The author, P.L. Travers, proves to be an uncompromising curmudgeon who has no intention of letting her beloved characters become mangled in the Hollywood machine. However, when the books stop selling and she finds herself in need of money, Travers reluctantly agrees to consider Disney’s proposition.

This has been on my movie list for such a long time and it was worth the watch. Going into this film, I knew that this would be a bit sad, but it was such a tear-jerker. It was a great movie from the storytelling aspects to the portrayal of Walt Disney and P.L. Travers by Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson. They along with the supporting cast did such fantastic job! I had no idea all of the drama behind the scenes to make Mary Poppins, on top of Travers sad childhood and why her characters were so important to her. This was a beautiful, touching movie!

TV

Because This is My First Life

Synopsis: To save money, two housemates get married but soon face unexpected complications, such as demanding in-laws and having to face their own growing bond.

I usually enjoy every K-drama that I watch, but so far I am absolutely blown away by this drama. The writing is very good, and I feel that this show is severely underrated. It follows the “marriage contract” trope, but the show is so much more than that. It talks about relationships (platonic/romantic), careers, issues in the workplace, gender equality, and growing up. It’s very realistic, but is also full of many heart-warming and comedic moments. This show is becoming one of my favorites.

Queer Eye

Synopsis: More than a decade after the original series went off the air, Netflix reboots the “Queer Eye” franchise with a new Fab Five and a new setting, trading in the concrete jungle of New York City for communities in and around Atlanta. The style experts forge relationships with men and women who often have different beliefs from them, leading to moments of social commentary interspersed with style advice.

I watched the original Queer Eye, so I was excited to finally get some time to watch the new one. I love it just was much as the original show. I love learning about everything from food to lifestyle tips from the Fab Five and their vibrant personalities that shine. I love how they work with each person to transform and help him inside and out. It’s so touching, watching them develop great friendships with each other and the person they help for each episode.

The Sound of Your Heart Reboot

Synopsis: Webtoonist Cho Seok is back with more anecdotes of mix-ups, unintended antics and bathroom blunders.

I was a bit worried when I heard about this reboot since I knew that most of the original cast was replaced in the newest version. However, the reboot is just as funny as it’s original run and with even more episodes to enjoy. I found myself laughing till I had tears in my eyes. Some episodes were a hit or miss for me, but as a whole I genuinely enjoy this reboot. I recommend this to people who like K-dramas full of humor as this is more of a sitcom than drama.

Music

Honesty by Pink Sweat$

Lately, I’ve been in a mood to update my music playlists and I have been seeking out a lot of new music. I landed upon Pink Sweat$ and I love his smooth vocals in this track and it’s overall acoustic sound and feel. I’ll be checking out more of his music.

To Be With You by Jose James

This is the type of R&B that I love to listen to on a daily basis. This track by James is relaxing and mellow. The overall piano melody meshes incredibly well with his soft vocals.

Kick It – NCT 127

I was really caught off guard by this new NCT 127 with is aggressive sound mixed with a R&B melody. This track is creeping up into my list of top favorites by the group. I love the martial arts theme for the video too! I use this song to workout all the time now.

Youtube

Absolute History

I am such a history nerd and I love all of the content this channel puts out. They cover a wide variety of historical topics and their videos feel like well-produced documentaries. I’ve learned a lot from their videos.

Kemushichan

I have been such a longtime fan and viewer of Loretta’s channel. Her videos about Japanese language and culture are fun and innovative. She shares a lot of great language learning tips and some incredible travel videos of life in Japan!

  1. Excellent recs!! I have actually been thinking lately that I’d like to branch out more into K-dramas, so I’ve been collecting recs all over the place. Because This Is My First Life sounds adorable!

  2. I didn’t know that P.L. Travers was reluctant to have her work Disney-fied, although I can understand her reservations. I remember there being a really interesting biography of her being published a few years ago and it’s still on my TBR, so now I’m doubly curious! (But of course the libraries are closed. Maybe I’ll have to reread Mary Poppins while I wait!)

One of my recent favourite things is Jane and Dorothy, a biography of Jane Austen and Dorothy Wordsworth by Marian Veevers. Neither is exactly a favourite writer of mine, so I wasn’t sure if I would find this book very interesting, but Veevers has a way of making it very conversational, the ways in which these two women’s lives were similar (their financial insecurity and reluctance to marry, etc.) readable and engaging. As for viewing, I’ve discovered the two seasons of “Better off Ted” which I find high-lari-ee-us. And I’m catching up with “Fresh off the Boat” (which I find has gotten a little instructive, but I still love the characters).

Is April being good to you so far?

    1. Happy April! 🙂

I didn’t know much about P.L. Travers until I watched the movie, but I’m more curious now about her backstory. I do understand her reservations about having a book turned into a movie. I think most authors are protective of their works and I get that. I don’t think I’ve actually read Mary Poppins now that I think about it. I have heard of “Better off Ted” but I haven’t watched it yet. It sounds like something I should add to my watch list. Last year I started a re-watch of “Fresh off the Boat”, but I stopped somewhere in the second season and need to finish. I’m sad the show is over. So far April is good to me. Hoping to catch up on more TV and reading month. Hope you have a good month!
