My Favorite Things: September

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

TV

Superstore: Seasons 1&2

Synopsis: An oddball family of employees at supersized megastore Cloud 9 tackles the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions. Stalwart employee Amy is just trying to hold it all together despite the best efforts of her daftly clueless manager Glen and his iron-fisted assistant Dina. Rounding out the crew is new hire Jonah, a dreamy dreamer, sardonic Garrett, ambitious Mateo and sweet young mother-to-be Cheyenne. From bright-eyed newbies to seen-it-all veterans, bumbling seasonal hires and in-it-for-life managers, they’re all going to get through another day — together.

Why haven’t I watched this show sooner?! I’ve always seen it advertised, but never sat down to watch it until now. Being that I’ve worked in retail on and off for some years, I could really relate to a lot of the people that work at Cloud 9 and some of the customer interactions that they have on a daily basis. This show is so funny not only because of the amazing writing, but the cast of characters (and the actors that play them). It’s hard to explain why I love this show so much, so you have to watch it for yourself. Just know that it will have you laughing constantly.

The Toys That Made Us: Seasons 1&2

Synopsis: For some people, the favorite memories from their childhoods are playing with toys, some of which become iconic through the years as multiple generations of people play with the venerable playthings. This series takes a look at some of America’s greatest toy franchises, including the people and companies that created them, telling the stories of the rise — and, sometimes, fall — of the billion-dollar creations.

I’m very much a kid at heart, so this show appealed to me a lot. It’s a very interesting docu-series on how famous toys rose to popularity. Some of my favorite episodes covered Hello Kitty, Barbie, and LEGO. It was eye-opening and I learned a lot of the creators of the products as well as their marketing strategies. Here’s hoping they make future seasons of this show!

Prime Minister and I

Synopsis: Prime Minister Kwon Yool works well at his office, but he struggles to raise his three children alone. Nam Nam Da-Jung  is a reporter full of enthusiasm at work, but she always ends up missing big scoops. Nam Da-Jung comes to Kwon Yool and his three kids like a Christmas present.

I’m three episodes away from finishing this K-drama and I’m pretty pleased with it. It’s got a May-December romance that works and the chemistry between the main two leads is very good. Despite the cheesy synopsis for this drama, it’s very heartwarming and endearing despite all of the melodramatic plot twists that happen within it. It’s pretty lighthearted and I like how it’s centered around the aspect of family. It’s got a lot of laughs since the MC Da Jung is always getting into some pretty awkward situations, plus the constant witty banter between the couple made me smile. I was surprised by some of the plot twists in the story, but it definitely added to the suspense part of the story.

Movies

Overboard

Syonpsis: Kate is a single, working-class mother of three who’s hired to clean a luxury yacht that belongs to Leonardo — a selfish, spoiled and wealthy Mexican playboy. After unjustly firing Kate, Leonardo falls off the boat and wakes up with no memory of who he is. To get payback, Kate shows up at the hospital and convinces the confused amnesiac that they’re married. As Leonardo tries to get used to manual labor and his new family, Kate starts to wonder how long she can keep fooling her fake husband.

I was in the mood for a cute rom-com and I remember seeing this movie advertised earlier in this year so I decided to check it out. It was very predictable, but it still did the job of leaving the viewer with that warm and fuzzy feeling after the credits started rolling. It was nice to Derbez and Faris work together in this rom-com and I liked how the re-make was multicultural-based with the movie switching from English to Spanish. There’s a lot of crazy antics that will have you laughing out loud in this movie. I’ll have to go back and watch the original to see how it compares to the remake.

Breaking In

Synopsis: Shaun Russell takes her son and daughter on a weekend getaway to her late father’s secluded, high-tech vacation home in the countryside, but the family soon gets an unwelcome surprise when four men break into the house to find hidden money. After managing to escape, Shaun must now figure out a way to turn the tables on the desperate thieves and save her captive children.

Gabrielle Union kicked ass in this movie (literally)! Though the plot for the movie is very simple, I felt that it was executed well. There was constant action and an overlaying suspense throughout the whole movie which added to the viewing experience. I was on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next and if the family would escape from the house unscathed. The stunts were pretty cool in this movie! If you like a good thriller, I recommend it.

Music

Waiting For Your Return by Jasmine Chen

It’s about a month after I’ve seen this movie (twice) and I still have this entire album on repeat! This song is one of my favorite tracks off of the OST. Chen has soaring vocals in this song and I love the brass melody with that Jazz/Big Band sound. It give me Great Gatsby vibes.

Take Me To The Alley (Album) Gregory Porter

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Jazz while I work on the blog and freelance projects. One of my newer favorites is Gregory Porter who’s music is mellow and his vocals are so soothing. He’s a got a deep baritone voice that his fitting for the songs. This album by him is so good!

BOOYAH! by Flowback

I feel bad that I’m so out of touch with the newer J-Pop groups since it’s one of my favorite genres so I’ve been looking at the top music lists to see what’s popular. Flowback definitely caught my eye with their visuals and impressive choreography. I think I found my new favorite J-boy group.

  1. Oh, I’m so glad you’ve watched and enjoyed Superstore. I’ve considered it many times but wasn’t sure (and there’s always something else to watch, right?). Add me to the list of people who enjoy Gregory Porter’s voice: great stuff!

In September, I finally finished catching up with all the magazine subscriptions that have been piling up while I’ve been happily distracted by books and other leisure activities. It took me almost a year – 10 months – to catch up (the stacks were embarrassing – and I really did want to read them, time just gets away from you while you’re watching shows and movies and and and, right?) and now I am reading things as they arrive – which is so much better. That’s my September highlight!

    1. Yay another jazz music fan! Any aritsts that you can recommend to me? Congrats on finishing/catching up with all your magazine subscriptions. I still need to do that with some of mine too. Hope you have a good Oct! 🙂

      1. I only stumbled on him by following the recs through Google Play music, so it was just luck. I used to listen to music ALL the time, but now I am usually listening to podcasts during those times, so I am not a good resource for music. And I’m almost as behind with podcasts as I was with magazines, so… *hangs head*

  2. I love Superstore!! I’ve caught up with all the episodes and am eagerly awaiting more! I think my favorites are Dina and Mateo haha . And my favorite song from the Crazy Rich Asians album is “Yellow” by Katherine Ho. So good!

    1. I love “Yellow” from the CRA soundtrack. I still need to watch season 3 of superstore. I’m a bit busier now so it will take me a while to catch up.
