My Favorite Things: September

My Favorite Things is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. I hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River after an unexpected family tragedy. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life soon gets turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter discovers a mysterious portal to the afterlife. When someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, the mischievous demon gleefully returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Now this is how you do a reboot/sequel of a beloved film! Burton and the cast were able to capture the original spirit of the film as well as bring in some unique elements. I loved this film so much and I felt it was on par with the original movie. As always Burton brings whimsical and creepy elements together very well. The humor was done well and it was overall very entertaining. I can’t wait to rewatch this movie again!

Poupelle of Chimney Town

In an industrial town full of chimneys and black smoke, a young boy wants to see the stars for the first time. After meeting a man made of rubbish, the two set out on a journey to the skies.

The beautiful artwork in this movie is stunning and matches the book it’s based on (which I highly recommend). It is a heartwarming film about the friendship between Poupelle and Lubicchi as they set out on a journey where the people of the town don’t think it’s possible. Because it’s set around Halloween, it also makes for a solid Autumnal watch and I love the story’s overall message of believing in your dreams. The whimsical nature is sure to pull viewers in from the beginning and it’s heartwarming story is sure to stick with you long after viewing the film.

Seoul Station

A man desperately searches for his runaway daughter as the government struggles to shut down the area around a zombie outbreak.

This film shared some similarities to Train to Busan, but I felt it was still very different. A solid zombie film should do a good telling a story and making you care about the characters; which this film excelled in. It was action-packed and had you on your seat as the characters fight to survive against the undead. While it was a survival film at its core I also liked the cultural insights within the film’s narrative and how it ties into the characters we follow through the story.

Blue-Color Jobs: A Superstore Retrospective

Superstore explores the pain and pressure of living under the indifferent eyes of a giant corporation. I felt this network sitcom was so refreshing and it spoke volumes to me during my time working in retail. This video was a great breakdown of the show from its themes to character arcs.

The Dirty History Behind Thrifted Clothing

Second-hand clothing has been around for all of history and this video was informative and gives a concise background to how thrift shops got started. I also appreciated how it delves into thrifting and the stereotypes surrounding it as well as how race and class factor in this business.

Music

Harenchi by Chanmina

I’ve listened to Chanmina for a few years now and this song has been on repeat for a while. She’s such a talented artist and I love the powerful lyrics of her songs.

Antihero by Epik High

I got to see Epik High live last month in concert and now I’m a big fan of theirs. I have listened to their music casually and now I’ve been going through their discography since seeing the show. I love their vibe, lyricism, and variety in the Hip-Hop music they produce.
