Reading Recommendations: Paranormal Fantasy Reads
Hello everyone! For this month’s reading recommendations I decided to compile a list of some Paranormal fantasy reads that I’d like to share with you. These books are filled with magic, lots of adventure, and sometimes things that go bump in the night!
Synopsis: Isela Vogel has the power to attract the favor of the gods for anyone who can pay her fee but struggles to hide the degenerative hip condition that will end her career. Then she’s offered a job that will set her and her family up for life. Though her prospective patron is a formidable necromancer with a heated and infuriating gaze, she can hardly refuse the payday.
Isela is thrown into a world of supernatural creatures–demons after dark, witches in the shadows, shifters running wild in city parks–where the grace of gods can truly infuse the blood of the most mortal-seeming dancer. As the danger increases with each thrilling discovery, trusting Azrael may be the only way to survive a conspiracy to destroy the fragile peace of a broken world. ‘
Death’s Dancer is a novel full of mystery and suspense set in Prague. This paranormal/fantasy novel delves into the world of Isela who is a well renowned gods dancer. This book had a really interesting concept that I haven’t visited before in this genre, so I was very excited about reading it. The story is full of action packed scenes from fights, magic, and sparring dances. (Review)
Synopsis: Because of the disaster that was her last job, Zoe is searching for a fresh start as a travel book editor in the tourist-centric New York City. After stumbling across a seemingly perfect position though, Zoe is blocked at every turn because of the one thing she can’t take off her resume — human.
Not to be put off by anything — especially not her blood drinking boss or death goddess coworker — Zoe delves deep into the monster world. But her job turns deadly when the careful balance between human and monsters starts to crumble — with Zoe right in the middle.
The Shambling Guide To New York City is a fun and witty urban fantasy novel. It’s a clever take on a travel guide for “the big apple” except with a supernatural twist. really liked the cast the cast of characters and vast varieties of supernaturals featured in the story. Lafferty takes great care building a plot and using a familiar to city to draw in an audience. (Review)
Synopsis: In Strange Angels, Dru Anderson has what her grandmother called “the touch.” (Comes in handy when you’re traveling from town to town with your dad, hunting ghosts, suckers, wulfen, and the occasional zombie.) Then her dad turns up dead—but still walking—and Dru knows she’s next. Even worse, she’s got two guys hungry for her affections, and they’re not about to let the fiercely independent Dru go it alone. Will Dru discover just how special she really is before coming face-to-fang with whatever—or whoever— is hunting her?
Strange Angels is a fantastic book and a great starter to the series. Set in the modern world mixed with fantasy, it makes for a fun and enjoyable read. I love the different supernatural creatures featured; from wulfen (werewolves), to zombies, and even dhampir. The action is fast-paced and you will never be bored while reading it. (Review)
Synopsis: Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can’t trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.
The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland…
Labyrinth Lost is a wonderful YA book with a combination of magic, fantasy, and folklore. Our narrator of the story is Alex, a girl from a family of brujas (witches) who wishes she had a normal life instead of the one she’s destined for. Even though this novel is a journey through a magical time and place, it’s also a coming of age/self-discovery story which makes it relatable to its readers. (Review)
Synopsis: Grateful Knight isn’t looking for love when she moves into a rent-free house on the edge of a graveyard. At twenty-two, all she wants is to recover financially so she can move back to the city where she belongs.
But sparks fly when the gorgeous cemetery caretaker, Rick, introduces himself and mentions his suspicion that her new house might be haunted. Her attraction to him seems supernatural, and despite her resolve to not get involved, she literally can’t keep her hands off him.
Jack creates a fun world in the supernatural realm that her Knight Games novels are set in. There are witches, vampires, fairies, and much more. Even though the premise of the novels is that Glory, her main protagonist, deals with her new-found status as a witch, the plot doesn’t solely focus on its fantasy aspects. You get elements of drama, mystery, suspense, romance, and action. These elements make reading each one of her books an exciting adventure.
Synopsis: All the creatures of the night gather in “the Hollows” of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party… and to feed.
Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining – and it’s Rachel Morgan’s job to keep that world civilized.
A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she’ll bring ’em back alive, dead… or undead.
Dead Witch Walking is the first book in The Hollows series that my friend has been trying to get me to read for some years now and I’m so glad I finally read it. Rachel is awesome in her work field while also being a tad klutzy. She’s a bit too headstrong which get her into tricky situations of the cases she works on, but it’s entertaining to see how she’ll get the job done. Add in a bunch of lively and fun cast of characters and you’ll get hooked into The Hollows universe too!
That concludes my reading recommendations for paranormal fantasy books! What books do you recommend or what are your favorites? Comment below!
What a great list! I haven’t read a TON of books in this genre, but I like the look of several of these — esp the Lili St Crow one. It would be nice to have a fun new series to enjoy during quarantine, too! so I’ll have to give Strange Angels a try.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy Strange Angels!
