Reading Recommendations: Webtoons
I love reading comics, graphic novels, and manga. Most recently in the past couple of years I’ve been getting more into reading webtoons. I’ve even watched small-screen adaptations of some of my favorite stories. For this month’s reading recommendations list, I’m going to share some webtoons that I like to read. Enjoy!
Synopsis: After binge-watching beauty videos on YouTube, a shy, comic book fan masters the art of make-up, then sees her social standing skyrocket as she becomes her school’s prettiest pretty girl literally overnight. But will her elite status be short lived? How long can she keep her “real self” a secret? And what about that cute boy she likes? Could you imagine if he found out the truth?
This is one of the few webtoons I’ve been binge reading as of lately. The story sounds very similar to other things I’ve read before, but when you read the story it becomes much deeper. The characters are very in-depth and I like how even though the main characters has a passion for makeup, she’s on a journey to discover her inner beauty. It’s a story about growing up, love triangles, the world of makeup, and finding your passion.
Synopsis: What would you sacrifice to save your family? How far would you go to protect your people? For Clove, the last princess of a near-extinct Dragon clan, the answer is the unthinkable: MARRY your greatest sworn enemy in an effort to bring peace to your land.
Not only did the story peak my interest from the synopsis alone, but the artwork is so amazing! The colors and detail bring the story to life. The world building is strong and the story pulls you in from the first chapter. SubZero is one epic fantasy saga (the stories I love) with romance, rivalry, ancient dragons, and lots of action. I’m curious to see if the two kingdoms can truly unite. The fantasy aspects is what really hooks the reader in. Plus dragons are cool!
Synopsis: He’s a dark, uber-powerful god-level demon…who’s also really helpful around the house. Welcome to the unique world of Ghost Wife, where an average high school girl can go to sleep with normal teenage problems, only to wake up and find herself married to an over-protective demon with a creepy smile and an appetite for live cats.
Definitely an interesting comic, its half romance and half horror. The art style is interesting and the illustrations of the creepy ghosts are so creepy! Just a fair warning that there are no moving animations, but a few jump scare moments. The story is suspenseful and you never know when a new opponent will come between Liz and Damon. I finished this webtoon earlier this year and it gave me all the feels.
Synopsis: Meet Gwendolyn – living proof that princesses don’t always have it all. See, although she lives in a castle and her father is the King, Gwendolyn isn’t like a movie princess, or even a fairly-tale princess. She’s got a big heart, but isn’t particularly attractive and doesn’t have a Disney-quality singing voice. But one night, she accidentally stumbles upon the twisted world of the Cursed Princess Club, and her life will never be the same. Hexed and cast out, the ladies of the club are just the people Gwendolyn needs to show her that just because she doesn’t “fit the mold” does not mean she’s any less of a princess.
This webtoon had me laughing from the very first chapter. It’s a story about finding the beauty inside and loving yourself. Gwendolyn has such a big heart and I love how supportive her sisters (and family) are of her. Through joining the Cursed Princess Club she and other members learn to be more confident. It’s funny and heartwarming! There are some fun supernatural and magical elements that really add to the story. What I love most about this webtoon is it’s entertaining cast of characters!
Synopsis: Let’s Play is a featured Romance Webtoon created by Mongie.. This Webtoon is about a young woman named Sam Young whose dream is to become a game developer. Her dream was soon crushed when a popular “Viewtuber” reviewed her game and gave it a bad review, causing all his fans to spiral into a hatred of her. To make things worse, she soon discovers he is moving into the apartment next door.
This is one of the first webtoon I read when I started to get into webtoons. I like that while it is mainly a romance story, it has so many sub-plots with a strong narrative. It also touches on topics such as mental illness, gamer gate, sexism, and many other things. I like the way that these topics are discussed and are woven into the overall plot. The characters are so well-written and feel very real. There’s a good blend of comedy, romance, and drama in this story.
Synopsis: The beloved Dr. Matias Guevara tends to his patients in his little neighborhood health clinic, unaware that Dr. Fernando Guevera opened his new veterinary clinic right next door! With their patients confused and their tolerance running thin, the two grown men constantly bicker and compete! Will their similar names and professions cause their rivalry to go untreated, or will they heal each others broken hearts?!
This is a much newer webtoon and it doesn’t have many episodes as of yet, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far. From my first observations this is somewhat like an enemies-to-loves trope, but there’s more to unpack here. The cast of characters is diverse and it’s got some LGBT+representation here. I like the simple premise, but as the readers get to know the characters more, the story becomes much richer.
That concludes my list of recommended webtoons at the moment. There will be another installment in the future. Have you read any of these webtoons? Have any stories to recommend? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below!
