Slice of Life: Flower Day at Eastern Market 2018
Hello all! Finally back with a new Slice of Life post! Last month I visited one of my favorite spots, Eastern Market (located in Downtown Detroit), with some friends from college. To give a bit of background, Eastern Market is the largest historic public market district in the United States, and the Eastern Market farmer’s distribution center is the largest open-air flowerbed market in the United States and has more than 150 foods and specialty businesses.
Eastern Market is always full of vibrant activity, lots of sights and many things to do. One of their biggest annual events is Flower Day! Flower Day takes place every year on the Sunday after Mother’s Day and has been a time-honored tradition of Eastern Market since 1967. Growers offer a wide variety of flowers at a great value so it’s great place to pick up some plants for your garden indoors or outdoors.
Even though my friends got there about 8:30am (the event runs from 7am-5pm), the market was starting to become crowded. For Flower Day it’s best to get there early to get what you want before the selections were picked over. We walked through many aisles of cacti, succulents, flowers, and even fruits and vegetables. There was so much to take in and many vendors to shop from.
Compared to shopping at nursery, the prices at the market were so much cheaper. Flowers that usually cost $12 a pot were only $5 dollars so people had wagons (and their hands) full of flower, etc, I only intended on buying a couple of new indoor plants, but ended up with way more than I intended. But I still saved a lot of money.
Besides buying flowers, etc. there was so much to do! Food trucks lined the streets and we stopped a couple of times to pick up some goods. I personally chose some chicken and waffles, yum! There also were live music performances, marching bands, and many of the shops were open. So after picking up all of the plants and flowers we wanted, we did a little extra shopping.
All in all it was a great day! The weather was comfortable and thankfully not blazing hot, we picked up some good buys, my friends and I got to catch up, and there was a lot of fun sights and sounds.
Here are the flowers I picked up:
Current update: I don’t have the best green thumb, but after picking up some books on houseplants I’m learning how to take care of thwm better. My flowers are doing so hot, but my cacti and succulents are flourishing well!
Do you all have a Flower Day market in your hometown or similar places to shop at? Share your experiences in the comment section below! 🙂
Aww that’s a cute owl pot. I like those sort of plants because they hold more water.
Isn’t it! I love that they’re easy to take care of too!
