Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Novellas/Short Stories

op Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s topic is Favorite Novellas/Short Stories!

Normally I don’t read short stories/novellas, but I do have few recommendations I’d like to share with you all!

Fresh Romance by Various Authors – Diverse comics and romance stories?! This book is a great combination of both, the romance was sweet and I loved seeing multicultural and LGBT characters. The romance world needs more books like this!

Defy The Dark by Various Authors –  There is a wide variety of tales for every reader ranging from multiple genres such as Horror, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy. Some of the stories are a bit creepy and others are full-blown horror tales that will make you uneasy.

Spook Lights by Eden Royce –  I appreciate the subtle style of Gothic horror and that it’s not all about jump scares and intense gore. Instead of things jumping out at you from beyond the pages it’s the suspense that slowly creeps up on you

Gorilla, My Love by Toni Cade Bambara – This novel is a collection of Bambara’s fifteen short stories set in New York and rural South Carolina. The collection is of full of various protagonists that bring their own color to each story. The stories will make you smile, laugh, and maybe even cry.

Krik? Krak! by Edwidge Danticat – Danticat knows how to weave together an excellent story with powerful characters that make an impact. I appreciated that she used a variety of characters (most of which are female) to offer the many perspectives of life in Haiti (and America).

Through The Woods by Emily Carroll –  Each story depicts its own unique theme such as jealously between brothers and arranged marriages. Some of the stories are genuinely scary and leave you feeling unsettled, while others are more subtle and discuss things that go bump in the night.

What books do you have on your own list? Share your thoughts in the comment section below. 🙂
