What I’m Listening To…90’s Anime Themes Vol. 1
Hello readers! I love listening to music of all genres on a daily basis. I can’t go a day without popping on some headphones and listening to some upbeat tunes while I dance around my room or relax from a long day by listening to calming songs. In my segment “What I’m Listening To” I share some of my favorite song picks with you in a mini-playlist consisting of five tracks.
This month’s playlist (as you can see from the title) will have multiple volumes. I love 90’s anime music and art style so much. Even though I didn’t start watching anime until the mid 2000s, these songs/shows give me some nostalgia. I hope you enjoy these picks!
1) Smile Bomb from Yuyu Hakusho OST
This is the first opening theme of the series Yuyu Hakusho that focuses on a high school delinquent becoming a “Underworld Detective”, investigating various cases involving demons and apparitions in the human world The bass is funky, the melody is upbeat, and the lyrics are uplifting as it’s a song about overcoming obstacles.
2) Cruel Angel’s Thesis from Neon Genesis Evangelion OST
This is one of my go-to anime karaoke songs. The lyrics are are kind of heavy, as the song relfects the show’s plot of violent monsters descend upon Earth to destroy humanity and how a young boy fights back. There’s something about the brass in the background that makes you want to sing along.
3) Moonlight Densetsu from Sailor Moon OST
I used to watch this show all the time as a kid before I even knew what anime really was. It’s the prefect theme for a magical girl anime and it’s so iconic that everyone knows this song. I like both the English and Japanese versions of the song, but I do notice the English ver. has more of a edgier guitar melody.
4) Freckles from Rurouni Kenshin OST
I’ve read more of the manga than watched the anime, but I like them both. This show follows a former assassin, known as Hitokiri Battosai who disappears to become Himura Kenshin: a wandering swordsman who protects the people of Japan with a vow to never take another life. This is probably one of the most happy-go-lucky themes I’ve ever heard for an anime. It’s bright and reflects some of the more lighthearted moments in this show.
5) Mune ga Doki Doki from Case Closed OST
Case Closed is one of my favorite mystery anime shows. I prefer the English version of this song a bit more for this particular opening song. I like how it’s got a classic rock sound to it. This show follows an amateur detective who was transformed into a child while investigating a mysterious organization and solves a multitude of cases.
I hope you enjoyed this playlist! What are some of your favorite road trip/driving songs? Comment below!
