What I’m Listening To…Favorite Musicals Pt.3
Hello readers! I love listening to music of all genres on a daily basis. I can’t go a day without popping on some headphones and listening to some upbeat tunes while I dance around my room or relax from a long day by listening to calming songs. In my segment “What I’m Listening To” I share some of my favorite song picks with you in a mini-playlist consisting of five tracks.
I love musicals with all my heart! There’s something about people spontaneously bursting out into a song that makes me happy! Since I have so many favorites (too many to count) this is part three of my top musical picks! (Part One) Enjoy!
I Got The Sun In The Morning from Annie Get Your Gun
This musical is the fictionalized version of the life of Annie Oakley, a sharpshooter who starred in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, and her romance with sharpshooter Frank E. Butler. If you know musicals you’ll recognize Bernadette Peters who starred in the 1999 show revival. This was actually a musical that was put on at my school during my high school years. I loved the western theme and the big band-sounding showstopper songs.
Dat’s Love from Carmen Jones
This is the only version of Carmen I watched growing up and I enjoyed it. This 1943 Broadway musical is Bizet’s opera Carmen updated to a World War II-era African-American setting. It stars Dorothy Dandridge whose voice is absolutely phenomenal. I haven’t seen this film in years and definitely need to do a re-watch of it.
If I Were A Bell from Guys and Dolls
This musical is also nostalgic for me as I was a part of the cast when we performed this show in high school. I know the entire soundtrack by heart still! This musical tells the overlapping stories of high-roller Sky Masterson, who falls in love with mission worker Sarah Brown, and lovable rapscallion Nathan Detroit, engaged for 14 years to Miss Adelaide, a headliner at the Hot Box Club. A fun musical with many catchy songs.
Dreamgirls from Dreamgirls
Being that my hometown is where Motown music was born, this film holds a special place in my heart. Dreamgirls follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit girl group known as “The Dreams” and their manipulative record executive. Such a spectacular musical and I highly recommend the movie.
Feed Me by Little Shop of Horrors
A classic musical that is a well-known dark comedy. The songs are incredibly soulful and funky. To sum up the story, it’s a musical about a nerdy florist who finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed. It’s crazy and weird at times, but I like that it’s not a traditional musical.
I hope you enjoyed this playlist! What are some of your favorite musicals? Comment below!
Ooh, lots of proper musicals there (older ones). My grandad was a semi-professional singer and I have his old scores of White Horse Inn and South Pacific. I love Oklahoma, although I really liked the musical of The Secret Garden that came out oh, 20 years ago it must have been.
How cool that your grandad was a singer! I still have not seen Oklahoma. I know it’s a classic and it’s one of many, many musicals on my watchlist.
